Sudden Cardiac Death—A New Insight Into Potentially Fatal Genetic Markers

Abstract: Sudden cardiac death (SCD) is an unexpected and dramatic event. It draws special attention especially in young, seemingly healthy athletes. Our scientific paper is based on the death of a young, 23-year-old professional footballer, who died on the football field after a two-year history of cardiac symptoms. In this study we analyzed clinical, ECG and laboratory data, as well as results of genetic testing analysis in family members. To elucidate potential genetic etiology of SCD in this family, our analysis inc… Show more

“…Fifteen patients were enrolled into this study, and all completed the study protocol, without any adverse event. Patients were referred for: ventricular arrhythmia, 7 atrio‐ventricular nodal re‐entrant tachycardia (AVNRT), 4 Wolff‐Parkinson‐White, 1 and supra‐ventricular tachycardias 4 . The mean left ventricular ejection fraction was 52 ± 9.1 %.…”

“…In order to improve diagnostics, predict illness risk, and create targeted therapeutics, genomic medicine strives to understand the genetic basis of diseases. An excellent example of this approach is the prediction of illness risk in cardiovascular diseases [ 60 ].…”

“…Genomic DNA was isolated from the patient's blood sample and subjected to clinical next-generation sequencing using a “Sudden cardiac death” panel ( 13 ). The analysis included sequence analysis of 294 genes ( Supplementary Table S1 ) which were sequenced to a minimum depth of ≥50× and an average of 350×.…”
