“…Yoga has been shown to help in improved breathing function and coronary artery calcium (CAC), increased adaptation to hypoxia and improved mood [32][33][34]. Sudarshan Kriya yoga (SKY) which is known to be helpful in depression, anxiety and stress has now also been reported to increase the spontaneous respiratory coupling and cardiac autonomous control in patients with anxiety and stress disorders which decreases the risk of cardiovascular disease in such patients (Table 3) [39][40][41]. A study done among the heart failure (HF) patients has shown that 12 weeks of yoga therapy (Meditation and pranayama) along with standard medical therapy resulted in a significant decrease in Heart Rate (HR) (p<0.001), Rate pressure product (RPP) (p<0.001), systolic blood pressure (p<0.01), diastolic blood pressure (p<0.001), normalized Low Frequency power (LFnu) (p<0.001), low freq., high freq.…”

“…Of note, the largest reduction in depression occurred within the first 4 weeks, with small decreases during the subsequent half of the intervention period. In a further study, practicing SKY, which includes slow-paced breathing, resulted in enhanced vagal functioning in patients suffering from depression and/or anxiety, in addition to symptom reduction (Zope and Zope, 2013;Toschi-Dias et al, 2017).…”

“…In the practice of yoga, various breathing methods such as chest respiration, which increases the sympathetic nervous system, and abdominal breathing, which increases the parasympathetic nervous system are used. Previous studies have demonstrated that yoga breathing techniques when used alone improved symptoms in patients with psychiatric disorders and healthy elderly individuals [27][28][29]. Santaella et al [28] reported that the Sudarshan Kriya Yoga breathing technique significantly improves maximum expiratory and inspiratory pressures of pulmonary function, and significantly decreases low component and low frequency/high frequency ratio (marker of sympathovagal balance) of heart rate variability in healthy older individuals.…”

Toschi-Dias et al [29] demonstrated that the Sudarshan Kriya Yoga breathing technique improved subjective symptoms while decreasing sympathetic modulation and cardiac autonomic control; specifically, it was shown to increase parasympathetic modulation and cardiorespiratory coupling in in patients with anxiety-depression disorders. Intentional change for respiratory rhythms translates into changes in the neural activity of brainstem [30].…”
