Suction Pile Foundations: Experience in the Mediterranean Offshore and Installation Feedback

Abstract: Suction piles are widely used in deepwater engineering both for anchoring and as foundation systems. In the first case the piles serve as anchor points for mooring systems in alternative to more standard drag anchors or piles. More recently, however, they have been used as structure foundations. In this role suction piles are a competitive alternative to the more traditional solutions of driven piles or mudmats, for platform jackets, subsea systems and subsea equipment protection structures. This solution prov… Show more

“…As for the installation of suction foundations, analysis methods are proposed based on theoretical deduction [17] and model tests [18][19][20]. In practice, the pressure difference and foundation inclination are generally monitored to guide installation [8,21,22]. However, full-scale field tests monitoring the pore water pressure and earth pressure distribution during installation are very limited.…”

“…It not only can be used as a deep-sea anchor foundation of floating platform, but also can be used as a support base of offshore structures [1][2][3] . At present, bucket foundation is also widely used in oil field manifold system, used as the foundation of heavy equipment such as wellhead or pipeline terminal [4,5] . In the stage of pipeline installation and operation, bucket foundation will be subjected to vertical load (V), horizontal load (H), moment (M) and torsion (T) from the superstructure.…”
