Sucrose Improves the Postharvest Life of Cut Flowers of a Hybrid Limonium

Abstract: Regardless of their maturity at harvest, the vase life of cut inflorescences of the hybrid Limonium `Fantasia' placed in deionized water was 4 to 5 days. A vase solution containing Physan (a quaternary ammonium disinfectant solution) at 200 μl·liter–1 and 20 g sucrose/liter not only prolonged the longevity of individual florets but also promoted bud opening so that the vase life of cut inflorescences extended to 17 days. Pulse treatment with 100 g sucrose… Show more

“…A combination of germicides and sucrose is generally used to prolong the vase life of gladiolus (Gladiolus ×grandiflora hort. ), hybrid Limonium, Heuchera sanguinea Engelm., rose (Rosa), and freesia (Freesia) flowers (Bravdo et al 1974;Doi and Reid, 1995;Han, 1998;Ichimura et al, 1999;Woodson, 1987). However, Jones and Hill (1993) reported that a bacteriocide, sodium dichloroisocyanuric acid (DICA), reduced longevity of tulip cv.…”

“…Supplying sucrose promotes bud opening and retards flower senescence in many cut flowers (Bravdo et al, 1974;Doi and Reid, 1995;Han, 1998;Ichimura et al, 1999;Woodson, 1987). Recently, we demonstrated that trehalose, a nonreducing disaccharide consisting of two α-[1, 1]-linked glucose units, markedy suppressed water loss and enhanced vase life and viability in petals of gladiolus, cv.…”

“…However, consumer vase life in rudbeckia and 'Sun Gold' zinnia decreased significantly when 8-HQC was added to the vase water. The addition of 8-HQC to the holding water caused phytotoxicity in 'Fantasia' statice (Limonium hybrids) (Doi and Reid, 1995). Germicide effect can vary considerably among species and cultivars (Jones and Hill, 1993).…”

“…It is well known that sugars prevent senescence of cut flowers and vegetables. Sucrose improved the postharvest life of cut flowers of Limonium (Doi and Reid, 1995), Liatris (Han, 1992), Eustoma grandiflorum (Cho et al, 2001), and many other species. Sucrose supply increased longevity and inhibited chlorophyll degradation of broccoli (Brassica oleracea) branchlets (Irving and Joyce, 1995).…”
