The Indo‐Burma biodiversity hotspot has one of the world's most species‐rich inland waters. However, its freshwater biodiversity faces habitat loss and species extinction due to large‐scale development of water resources, pollution, exploitation of native biota, and introduced non‐native species. These threats include the South American suckermouth armoured catfishes, Pterygoplichthys spp., that have invaded parts of this biodiversity hotspot. Pterygoplichthys spp. are among the most impactful introduced fishes globally and pose a ‘very high risk’ of becoming invasive once introduced. This paper aims to compile a distribution database for Pterygoplichthys spp., map their current global distribution, and estimate their potential distribution extent in the Indo‐Burma biodiversity hotspot using MaxEnt. In the Indo‐Burma region, Pterygoplichthys spp. have already been reported from China, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam, with populations also present in neighbouring India, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia. No populations were verified for Cambodia and Laos. A maximum entropy model was developed based on the current global distribution of Pterygoplichthys spp. The species distribution model showed that the entire biodiversity hotspot, except the spine of the Arkan Mountains and the Hengduan Mountains from Three Gorges to the Hong River Valley, is suitable for Pterygoplichthys spp. An effective temperature of 15°C was identified as the lower limit of Pterygoplichthys spp. habitat suitability. Pterygoplichthys spp. were identified as a high‐risk taxon for freshwaters of almost the entire Indo‐Burma biodiversity hotspot. A coordinated management plan for Pterygoplichthys spp. is required to safeguard the freshwater biota of the Indo‐Burma freshwater ecosystems.

Invasive suckermouth armored catfish Pterygoplichthys spp. successfully spread during one decade into many river systems of Vietnam. Wide and rapid invasion of armored catfish might be associated with using brackish water in estuaries to spread from one river system to another. The first goal of our study was to assess the horizontal and vertical distribution of invasive fish in freshwater (Da Rang River) and in brackish water (Da Rang River estuary) associated with circadian rhythm. In the both sampling locations, fish were mainly caught at nighttime at the bottom and near the surface using the net traps and vertical nets. In estuary, fish were caught in the net traps with distance 2.0–7.5 m from the right or left banks where water was predominantly fresh. In freshwater of the Da Rang River, fish were often caught near the left bank with gravel and stone substrate. The second goal of our study was to experimentally evaluate the circadian (12 hours of the night and 12 hours of the day) rhythm of locomotor activity (LA) of fish. Fish from different freshwater locations (Am Chua canal and Da Rang River) had a similar diurnal dynamic of LA with mostly movements (77–83% of total diurnal LA) at nighttime (18:00–6:00, GMT+7) at the end of the wet season. Armored catfish from the brackish water location (Da Rang River estuary) also were mostly active (76% of total diurnal LA) overnight. However, fish from freshwater and brackish water had difference in the timing of behavioral activity. Fish LA from estuary was significantly lower than LA of fish from freshwater locations during 18:00 to 21:00 before low tide. The results of our field and experimental studies established that armored catfish in estuary moved in horizontal and vertical planes predominantly at nighttime. Tide level regulates locomotor activity of invasive fish and could influence on the possibility of their spreading through the estuary.

Suckermouth-amored catfishes (Pterygoplichthys spp.) is one of the most widespread invasive species in Vietnam. However, it is relatively unknown how these species have evolved in divergent adaptations to local conditions varying in habitat types, which is essential for managing their invasion in Vietnam. We addressed this by analyzing a large number of fish (766 phenotypes) collected in lotic (Dinh River) and limnic (Suoi Trau Resevoir) habitats in southern Vietnam during one year. Allometric growth patterns estimated by von Bertalanffy growth functions were \({L}_{t}= 500\left(1-{e}^{-0.71(t-0.44)}\right)\) in Dinh River and \({L}_{t}= 346\left(1-{e}^{-1.01(t-0.62)}\right)\) in Suoi Trau Resevoir. Estimated fish age was 2.9 to 4.2 years old. The percentage of fish with matured ovaries peaked in August (100%) and was lowest in February (< 10%), indicating that these fish breed all year round. The main reproductive season is April-October, with a peak in July-August as indicated by gonado-somatic indices index and monthly changes in the percentage of matured fish. The length at 50% maturity 22.93 and 17.51 cm for females from lotic and limnic habitats, respectively. Lotic fish had the fecundity (5830 ± 546 oocytes/ind.) which was five times larger than that of limnic fish (1042 ± 107 oocytes/ind.). This result was consistent with the larger oocytes of females: 2.94 ± 0.03 and 2.58 ± 0.01 mm for fish from Dinh River and Suoi Trau Resevoir, respectively. The faster growth and bigger fish with higher fecundity in the lotic habitats suggest they can accelerate greater population growth, potentially affecting local communities more than those from limnic habitats. Our study sheds light on substantial phenotypic divergences in reproduction and growth of the armored catfish between lotic and limnetic habitats in Vietnam, which is fundament for arriving at an effective management plan.
