Background James Barrett Brown was one of the founders of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery as a specialty in the United States. Susan Mackinnon started the James Barrett Brown Resident Research Day in 1997 in his honor to serve as an annual opportunity for trainees to present their research to the Division and a visiting contemporary leader in plastic surgery. We sought to determine the proportion of Resident Research Day projects that have progressed to publication. Methods Available internal records from 1998 to 2019 were used to identify presenters and projects. Academic productivity of presenters was estimated with the h-index from the Scopus database. Results One hundred forty-five students, residents, and fellows presented 276 projects at Resident Research Day from 1998 to 2019. These presentations were associated with 144 unique peer-reviewed publications, representing 52% of the presented projects. They were published an average of 1.8 years after presentation, and the presenter was the first or last author on 67% of them. The current average h-index of trainees who published at least 1 project (8.3) is significantly higher than the h-index of those who did not (5.0, P < 0.001). Conclusions The James Barrett Brown Resident Research Day not only honors the legacy of Brown but also enhances scholarly activity of trainees. The opportunity to present and publish research teaches project planning, implementation, and data analysis, followed by manuscript preparation and the publication process. This important skill set can provide the foundation for the academic careers of future leaders in plastic surgery.

Objetivo: Analizar la participación de los residentes de cirugía plástica de Chile en la publicación científica de los últimos 20 años y evaluar su experiencia durante la residencia.Materiales y Métodos: Revisión de la literatura desde 1998-2018 bajo los términos: Cirugía Plástica, Plastic Surgery y Chile. Se incluyeron aquellos con al menos un autor cirujano plástico con filiación en Chile. Se registró la participación reportada de residentes y analizaron sus autores según su período de residencia y fecha de publicación, agregándolos como residentes no reportados. Se analizó tema, año de publicación y revista. Se aplicó una encuesta a residentes de cirugía plástica y post-becados recientes para conocer la percepción sobre su participación en actividades científicas. Se comparó la participación entre residentes con y sin año de investigación mediante el test exacto de Fisher.Resultados: Predominó la temática reconstructiva (48,2%), en adultos (68,6%) y en centros Universitarios (48,7%). La participación reportada de residentes fue de 8,4%, subiendo a 38,2% al ampliarla a los no explicitados como residentes. Los encuestados expusieron la falta de tiempo como principal impedimento a la publicación y participación en congresos.Discusión: La participación en actividades científicas resulta beneficiosa para residentes, sus tutores y la reputación académica de sus centros. La mayoría de los residentes cree que su participación podría haber sido mayor en caso de que se hubiesen dado más facilidades.Conclusiones: La participación de residentes de cirugía plástica se encuentra sub reportada. Programas de investigación, tiempos protegidos y mayor tutorización podrían aumentar esta cifra.

Background: This study explored the impact of dedicated research year(s) on long-term research productivity and career choices of plastic surgeons as academicians. Methods: Scopus and Web of Science were accessed in September 2020 to collate publications and H indexes of alumni who graduated from integrated plastic surgery residency programs from 2011 to 2020. Public profiles were utilized to determine academic status. Corresponding data were grouped by residency program type (traditional programs without required research, programs with one required research year, and a single program with variable research years). Unpaired t tests and 1-way analysis of variance were conducted to compare average H indexes and publication counts of alumni from each group. χ2 tests analyzed differences in academic statuses. Results: Alumni who completed one required research year published significantly more with a higher H index compared with those from traditional programs. Similar results were found among alumni who completed 2 research years compared with 0 or 1 year within a single program. Residents who completed one required research year were more likely to hold dual academic and nonacademic positions after graduation compared with their traditional counterparts. However, there was no statistical difference in academic status observed for surgeons who graduated from the program with variable research years. Conclusions: Participating in research year(s) during residency is predictive of ongoing academic productivity of surgeons within the first 10 years of completion of residency. This becomes important for training craniofacial surgeons, the majority of whom practice in academic settings.
