Successful Use of Interventions in Combination to Improve Human Papillomavirus Vaccination Coverage Rates Among Adolescents—Chicago, 2013 to 2015

Abstract: In 2013, National Immunization Survey-Teen data indicated that >40% of female adolescents had not initiated the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine series and >60% had not completed the series, documenting vaccination rates much lower than those for other vaccines recommended for adolescents. “…Further, since most influenza vaccinations are given between October and January, it is logistically challenging for primary care practices to vaccinate all children. “…21 Other health departments have implemented enhanced AFIX programs with clinician-to-clinician visits, including Rhode Island and Chicago. 22,23 The Chicago program found 95% of all clinics had an increase in HPV vaccine initiation and 96% had an increase in series completion. 23 Their program included 12 SBHCs but they did not report on SBHC specific outcomes.…”

“…Multicomponent strategies targeting both A/P and HCPs mostly included educational and training interventions (5; 83.3%) [61][62][63]65,66] and reminders (5; 83.3%) [61][62][63][64]66], followed by periodic feedback reports on coverage (3; 50%) [61][62][63]. All described positive effects in terms of both HPV initiation and completion [61][62][63][64][65][66], but only three of them (50%) reported significant results [63][64][65].…”

In particular, offering HPV vaccination in bundle with other vaccinations (tetanus toxoid, reduced diptheria toxoid, acellular pertussis-Tdap-and tetravalen meningococcal-MCV4) to all subjects attending a medical visit, together with the establishment of an internal immunization registry and standing orders/reminders before any visit, showed to increase both first-dose uptake and all-doses completion [64].…”
