Successful Triple Combination Therapy of Disseminated Absidia corymbifera Infection in an Adolescent With Osteosarcoma

Abstract: Mucormycosis are opportunistic infections mostly observed in immunocompromised patients. We report the case of a 13-year-old girl who suffered a systemic mucormycosis without presenting the usual risk factors. She was undergoing antineoplastic chemotherapy for advanced osteosarcoma of the femur with an uncommunicative pathologic fracture and pulmonary metastasis. Absidia corymbifera was isolated from skin lesions at the primary tumor site. She subsequently developed fungal pulmonary localizations and blood ves… Show more

“…Recurrence and metastasis of the osteosarcoma usually occur at 1-3 years after surgery [18]. In this study, we compared the local recurrence rates and long-term survival rates after application of the 3 surgical methods, and we found that all 3 of these surgical modalities had a certain recurrence and lung metastasis rate.…”

“…14 Successful triple combination therapy with systemic high doses of liposomal amphotericin B, posaconazole, and caspofungin have also been shown to cure local infection and control systemic lesions in an immunocompromised patient with mucormycosis. 15 Apart from early diagnosis and prompt treatment, correction of any reversible predisposing factors is also an important part of patient management.…”
