Successful treatment with laparoscopy-assisted surgery for ileal perforation due to an ingested foreign body: A report of two cases

Abstract: HighlightsSmall bowel perforation by an ingested foreign body (FB) is a rare abdominal emergency.Computed tomography scan is most effective but imperfect for diagnosis.Inquiring about FB ingestion and a high index of suspicion are very important.Laparoscopic surgery is effective even in this rare abdominal emergency.Extracorporeal handling of the affected small bowel is useful in this condition.

“…Similarly, Ito et al outlined two cases who were diagnosed with ileal perforation caused by an ingested foreign body and underwent laparoscopic treatment accompanied by a mini laparotomy [ 7 ] Both patients had a shorter recovery period owing to the decreased invasiveness of laparoscopic surgeries compared to laparotomies [ 7 ]. Another patient with right lower abdominal pain who was misdiagnosed as acute appendicitis was reported by Yao et al where a swallowed wooden toothpick was discovered in the ileocecal region through abdominal CT scan.…”

“…13 Additionally, some case reports described the feasibility and advantages of laparoscopy for small bowel perforation secondary to an ingested foreign body. 14,15 These reports suggest that laparoscopic procedures are also beneficial in the treatment of small bowel perforation. Even though, poor laparoscopic view due to such conditions as severe intestinal distension or adhesion can be a limitation of laparoscopy.…”

“…Diagnostic laparoscopy can be combined with manual manipulations through extended port access. This technique is called laparoscopy-assisted surgery, and presented in the literature mostly as case reports [39][40][41]. In our series, ML was used in patients with abdominal trauma as a therapeutic procedure (Fig.…”

“…By applying this criterion, we introduced additional selection for the ML group. The wide use of advanced imaging modalities, like computerised tomography, in routine clinical practice might practically resolve this challenge [39][40][41] and expand indications for the employment of the ML approach.…”
