Successful Treatment of Pulmonary Artery Aneurysms Secondary to Possible Behçet’s Disease

Abstract: Pulmonary artery aneurysm (PAA) secondary to Behçet’s disease (BD) is a rare condition. The commonest presentation is hemoptysis, which can be fatal. Though the classical triad of recurrent oral and genital ulcers and relapsing iritis is present in most patients of BD, isolated pulmonary artery involvement termed as incomplete BD has been reported. Prompt diagnosis and immunosuppressive therapy can cause regression of aneurysm and prevent fatal hemoptysis. We report a case of PAA due to BD who presented with h… Show more

“…Infectious etiologies include bacterial infections, especially with right-sided endocarditis [4]; fungal infections such as mucormycosis [4]; and parasitic infection as in Chagas disease [5]. Several vasculitides have also been associated with pulmonary artery aneurysms, including Bechet's disease [6], HughesStoven's syndrome [7], Takayasu's arteritis, and giant cell arteritis [6]. In addition, dissecting aneurysms of the pulmonary artery have been reported due to complex cardiovascular anomalies such as Taussig-Bing mal- Congenital Heart Disease formation [8], after Blalock operation for Tetralogy of Fallot [9], and secondary to amyloidosis [10].…”

“…Corticosteroids attenuated the interstitial infiltration witnessed in our patient but presumably were inadequate to suppress the vasculitis that was driving it. In our experience, regression of aneurysms, usually with a corticosteroid/cyclophosphamide combination, is well described [10, 11]and therefore their original formation can presumably also be suppressed.…”
