Ligneous conjunctivitis and gingivitis were diagnosed in three related Scottish terrier dogs presented for investigation of severe conjunctivitis and respiratory signs. Hypoplasminogenaemia was confirmed in one of the three affected dogs. Supportive treatment was not effective, and the dogs died or were euthanased because of the disease. Post-mortem analysis of two of the dogs revealed multiple abnormalities including severe proliferative fibrinous lesions affecting the conjunctiva, gingiva, trachea, larynx and epicardium and multiple fibrous adhesions throughout the thoracic and abdominal cavities. One dog had internal hydrocephalus and lacked a cerebellar vermis. Ligneous membranitis was confirmed on histopathology. This is a rare condition in dogs but an important differential diagnosis for severe conjunctivitis and gingivitis.

An approximately 2-year-old female Doberman Pinscher was referred for the evaluation of bilateral, chronic proliferative conjunctivitis. Ophthalmic examination revealed bilateral thick, opaque pseudomembranes originating from the conjunctivae that prevented visualization of the cornea and interior structures of the eye. Histopathological findings of biopsies of the pseudomembranes were consistent with ligneous conjunctivitis. Serum plasminogen activity levels were within the normal range. Treatment with topical and systemic anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive drugs did not improve the conjunctival lesions. The pseudomembranes were surgically excised, and the conjunctival surfaces were reconstructed with amniotic membrane. At final re-examination two years postsurgery, there was no evidence of recurrence of the pseudomembranes. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first reported case of the successful treatment of canine ligneous conjunctivitis with amniotic membrane transplantation.

Lignöz konjonktivit oldukça nadir görülen konjonktivitlerden olup hem hasta hem de hekim için üstesinden gelmesi zorluk oluşturan bir tablodur. Sıklıkla iki gözü de tutan lignöz konkonktivit odunumsu görünümümde yalancı membran oluşumu ile karakterizedir. Göz kapakları ters çevrildiğinde tüm konjonktivayı kaplamış olarak görülen lezyon, fibrinden zengin olup sarımsı mukoid bir akıntı ile örtülmüş olabilir. Lezyon tedavi edilse bile tekrarlama eğilimindedir. Lignöz konjonktivitin plazminojen defekti ile ilişkili olduğu gösterilmiştir. Lezyonlar konjonktiva dışında vücuttaki diğer mukozalarda da ortaya çıkabilir. Lignöz konjonktivite eşlik eden diğer sistemik patolojiler de bildirilmiştir. Son yıllarda tedavisinde yeni yöntemler uygulanmaya çalışılmaktadır. Az rastlanan bu konjonktivit türünün zamanında ve doğru teşhis edilip tedavisinin doğru yönetilmesi önem arz etmektedir. Makalede lignöz konjonktivitin klinik, tarihçe, patogenez ve güncel tedavileri ile ilgili bilgiler verilmiştir.
