Successful Treatment of Bulky Granulocytic Sarcoma of the Retroperitoneum with High-Dose Chemotherapy and Autologous Peripheral Blood Stem Cell Transplantation

Abstract: Granulocytic sarcoma is a rare disease that is rarely curable with conventional chemotherapy. This report describes a case of a patient with bulky granulocytic sarcoma of the retroperitoneum who was treated with high-dose chemotherapy and autologous peripheral blood stem cell transplantation without administering granulocyte colony-stimulating factor before stem cell collection. According to bone marrow assessment and imaging studies, the patient remained in complete remission at 5 years after transplantation.… Show more

“…Three of the long survivors had also had stem cell transplants: one after pancreatic tumor, one after duodenal tumor, and one after retroperitoneal tumor that compressed duodenum . The response of one was confirmed by negative PET/CT scans over 5 years . The patient well over 10 years had relapsed after chemotherapy alone for stomach tumor in pancreas and marrow and long‐term disease control was achieved after salvage therapy .…”

“…Our patient received a standard 3 + 7 induction and consolidations, and then proceeded to auto-HCT at CR1, unexpectedly resulting in a favorable outcome. Matsui et al [33] also performed auto-HCT successfully in a patient with bulky retroperitoneal MS. Although the relapse rate after allo-HCT is lower, it is associated with higher rates of nonrelapse mortality, graft versus host disease, recurrent infections, and a poorer quality of life compared with auto-HCT.…”
