Successful Restoration of Visual Acuity with an Extended Range of Vision Intraocular Lens after Multifocal Laser Ablation

Abstract: As our baby boomer population is aging and developing cataracts, so are our post-LASIK patients. These patients underwent LASIK surgery as they wished to be spectacle-free and are hoping to remain so after intraocular lens (IOL) surgery. Unfortunately, very little information is available regarding the suitability of presbyopia correcting IOLs for post-LASIK patients. This case represents successful implantation of an extended range of vision IOL in a 59-year-old patient who underwent multifocal ablation excim… Show more

“…Other studies have also shown good VA from near to far distances, particularly in the far and intermediate ranges. 8 , 11 14 Visual symptoms reported in other studies have also been minimal with the ZXR00 IOL, and patient satisfaction has been high. 8 , 14 , 15 Additionally, reports for contrast sensitivity have been good with the extended range of focus multifocal technology.…”

“…Several eyes had prior myopic laser keratorefractive surgery, two of which had significant irregular astigmatism and higher order aberrations on corneal dual Scheimpflug with placido imaging. Limited study data are available on the results of EDOF implantation in postrefractive eyes [2527], but our experience with multifocal IOLs in such cases led us to proceed. One eye had prior vitrectomy for a macular hole with persistent distortion in the vision despite anatomic closure of the hole; she was able to achieve excellent acuity despite persistent microdistortion after phacoemulsification surgery.…”

“…Indeed, a previous successful restoration of the visual function after cataract surgery with implantation of an ERV IOL has been reported in a case of previous multifocal corneal laser ablation. 16 The aim of this study was to evaluate the refractive predictability and visual outcomes obtained after cataract surgery with implantation of an ERV IOL in eyes with previous LASIK for the correction of myopia and to confirm which IOL power formula provided the best prediction in such cases.…”
