Successful medical treatment of an orbital osteoma in a dog

Abstract: A 6-year-old neutered male German Shepherd-mixed breed with a 2-month history of bilateral conjunctival hyperemia, epiphora, and a firm, slowly progressive swelling of the medial canthal region of the left eye (OS) was examined. Ophthalmic examination OS revealed a firm and smooth mass, extending from the medial canthus toward the medial orbital wall. Indirect ophthalmoscopy revealed indentation of the nasal part OS, which corresponded to the position of the orbital mass. Orbital neoplastic diseases were the m… Show more

“…Differential diagnoses of osteoma include malignant osteosarcoma, chondrosarcoma and multilobular osteochondrosarcoma and other benign tumours such as osteochondroma and ossifying fibroma (Thomson and Pool 2002;Dennis 2005;Grozdanic et al 2013). Differentiation between malignant and benign bone disease cannot be made radiographically, because cranial neoplasms often show unstructured new bone formation and osteolysis (Dennis 2005).…”

“…Another treatment which is technically feasible in human medicine is image-guided cryoablation (Whitmore et al 2016). Chronic treatment with systemic nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, both in human (Goto et al 2011;Aiba et al 2014) and veterinary (Grozdanic et al 2013) medicine is also recommended. In fact, as reported by Kneisl and Simon (1992), nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are able to accelerate the healing of osteoma.…”

“…A single case of canine orbital osteoma was successfully treated medically . However, with the size and progression of the present osteoma (case 2), the authors probably would not have opted for medical therapy, had information on this modality been available at the time.…”

“…Conservative management is particularly problematic for monitoring central osteoma. 19 Limitations of this study included the diagnosis of osteoma made by radiographic and histopathologic findings, with limited clinical history. 9,13,14,18 Partial excision may be an option for cases considered nonresectable, however recurrence may be more likely especially for central osteomas.…”
