Successful medical treatment of an Aspergillus terreus mycetoma of the nostril/lip in a 16‐year‐old Fjord pony gelding with pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction

Abstract: The horse was treated medically with pergolide for the PPID and oral potassium iodide for the fungal infection, with good therapeutic response and no relapse after five months. Surgical debridement or excision was not performed. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first case report of a cutaneous mycetoma caused by A. terreus in a horse.

“…Potassium iodide (KI) is commonly used in the treatment of fungal infections in horses, including those caused by aspergillus species (Crothers et al, 2009; Randleff‐Rasmussen et al, 2017; Robinson et al, 2007; Schwarz et al, 2009). Its mechanism of action is unclear but is thought to be due to the enhancement of specific immunoprotection mechanisms (Hassan & Keen, 2012).…”

“…To summarise, the histopathological description, without granular lesions nor fungal invasion, is quite atypical for a fungus‐induced mycetoma, otherwise very rare in horses and frequently observed in cutaneous or subcutaneous tissues (Randleff‐Rasmussen et al . ). Histological examination might have been compared to aspergillosis granuloma in the mediastinum presenting with septated hyphae and Aspergillus ‐positive cultures that have been reported (Moore et al .…”

“…In the case reported here, the affected pony had concurrent pars pituitary intermedia dysfunction (PPID), which has been linked anecdotally to higher incidence of secondary infections (McFarlane ) and increased severity of fungal (Randleff‐Rasmussen et al . ) and parasitic disease (McFarlane et al . ; Raftery et al .…”
