“…Kosrirukvongs et al (236) reported that four of five culture-proven AK patients were treated successfully with 0.006% chlorhexidine solution alone. Imidazoles such as miconazole, itraconazole, and ketoconazole have been used with limited success (32,108,186,198,261,315,482). Topical treatment with miconazole, however, has lead to epithelial toxicity.…”

“…The responsible amoeba has been detected in the human cornea in two forms: as fragile trophozoites and as resistant dormant cysts. The medical treatment of this ocular infection remains very difficult because of the lack of antiamoebic drugs effective against cysts, which are responsible for frequent and serious recurrences.Since the first medical cure reported in 1985 (16), propamidine isethionate, an antimicrobial agent belonging to the diamidine family, has been the basic drug recommended for use in treatment, which includes the use of topical neomycin sulfate and various imidazoles (2,5,7,8,15). Unfortunately, propamidine is poorly cysticidal and the resistance of some Acanthamoeba strains has been reported (6, 10).…”

“…The disease is often initially misdiagnosed as herpes simplex keratitis or adenoviral keratitis (Tabin et al 2001). Early signs of Acanthamoeba keratitis clinically include epithelial irregularities, opacities, microerosions, microcystic edema, and patchy anterior stromal infiltrates (Berger et al 1990;Moore and McCulley 1989). Late during the disease course (prolonged infection), Limbal hyperemia, edema, and ring infiltrate can develop.…”
