Successful Installation of Horizontal Openhole Gravel-Pack Completions in Low Fracture Gradient Environment: A Case History from Deepwater West Africa

Abstract: This paper presents the design and execution of an openhole gravel-pack completion campaign in deepwater West Africa. Based on field history and past challenges, a novel approach was implemented to address the low fracture gradient. Various aspects of the gravel pack design are discussed - drilling and gravel pack fluid selection, screen selection, openhole displacement, filtercake removal, placement technique, and pumping design. The placement method uses screens with shunt tubes, an existing t… Show more

“…The β wave reverse packing starts at plugging location and the length from the heel of wellbore to plugging location is α wave packing length. There are many factors influencing the length of α wave packing [12][13][14][15][16], including pump rate, sand ratio, carrier fluid leakoff, washpipe/screen ratio, carrier fluid viscosity, fluid density and gravel density. For gravel packing of long horizontal wells in deepwater, the successful completion of α wave packing is an important first step.…”

“…Although, openhole gravel packing is now viewed as a means of enhancing the reliability, efficiency, and longevity of horizontal sand control completions, [1][2][3][4][5][6] there are still considerable risks in horizontal well gravel packing, especially in extreme cases such as long horizontal well and unconsolidated sandstone reservoir. [7][8][9] It is mainly manifested as premature bridging in the openhole/screen annulus before the gravel packing reaches the toe of the horizontal well, resulting in the failure of the operation.…”
