Success Rates of Unilateral vs. Bilateral Cataract Extraction in Dogs

Abstract: Postoperative results of 113 unilateral and 77 bilateral extracapsular cataract extractions (EC-CEs) in dogs were evaluated retrospectively. Restoration or improvement of functional vision was achieved in 79.6% of the eyes in dogs with unilateral extraction and 85.7% of the eyes in dogs with bilateral extractions at weeks 4 to 6. Complications occurring 6 weeks to 9 months after lens extraction lessened the surgical success rate in both groups. Twenty-six percent of the dogs in which bilateral lens removal was… Show more

“…The concern with unilateral surgery in a patient with bilateral cataracts is that the un-operated eye remains at risk for chronic LIU, lens luxation, retinal detachment and glaucoma and these may require medical and/or surgical intervention negating any cost savings [4,24]. Conversely, bilateral surgery has the advantages of restoring sight to both eyes with a single anesthetic episode and convalescent period, lower overall costs when compared with those of two unilateral surgeries, and a higher percentage of patients who regain vision from one or both eyes [25].…”

“…A realização da técnica cirúrgica de FACO em cataratas hipermaduras ainda é a melhor opção cirúrgica, já que a lente pode apresentar alterações significativas em sua estrutura capazes de comprometer o sucesso cirúrgico (Davidson et al 1990). Venkatesh et al (2010) observaram que a FACO em cataratas hipermaduras também são frequentemente realizadas em pacientes humanos atendidos na Índia, um país em desenvolvimento como o Brasil.…”
