Success rates of a skeletal anchorage system in orthodontics: A retrospective analysis

Abstract: Objectives: To evaluate the premise that skeletal anchorage with SAS miniplates are highly successful and predictable for a range of complex orthodontic movements. Materials and Methods: This retrospective cross-sectional analysis consisted of 421 bone plates placed by one clinician in 163 patients (95 female, 68 male, mean age 29.4 years 6 12.02). Simple descriptive statistics were performed for a wide range of malocclusions and desired movements to obtain success, complication, and failure rates. Results: Th… Show more

“…In clinical practice, selective grinding, acupuncture, therapeutic exercises, autogenic training, and physiotherapeutic procedures are actively used. 9,19,20 Together with other specialists, patients with TMJ dysfunction are prescribed drug therapy. Most often, such patients are prescribed sedatives, antidepressants, muscle relaxants, and antidepressants.…”

“…16,17 In dental practice, factors contributing to denture failure include unbalanced occlusal force, smoking, bone condition, improper handling, and mistakes in denture fitting, including injury, inadequate denture design, nonobservance of oral hygiene rules, presence of concomitant diseases, in particular, diabetes mellitus, and others. 16,[18][19][20] Bacterial infection is considered to be the most important factor contributing to denture failure, and the microbiota includes Prevotella intermedia, Porphyromonas gingivalis, Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, Bacterioides for sythus, Treponema denticola, Prevotella nigrescens, Pepto streptococcus micros, Fusobacterium nucleatum, and several other microorganisms causing peri-implantitis. 12,14,21,22 Bacteria are a key etiological factor in periodontal disease, so the composition of the microbiota in the areas surrounding the denture may have a significant impact on the condition of this area in the following.…”

“…Mini-implants have become a routine component of the contemporary orthodontists' anchorage armamentarium [1]. The possibility of preventing unwanted side effects by the skeletal anchorage, the relative ease of placement, the low cost, and the minimal need for patient compliance during active tooth movement have contributed to the increased popularity of this temporary anchorage device (TAD) in orthodontics [1].…”
