Success Factors in the FIFA 2018 World Cup in Russia and FIFA 2014 World Cup in Brazil

Abstract: Research on success factors in football focusing on national teams is sparse. The current study examines the success factors during the World Cup 2018 in Russia and the World Cup 2014 in Brazil. A total of 128 matches were analyzed using a generalized order logit approach. Twenty-nine variables were identified from previous research. The results showed that defensive errors (p = 0.0220), goal efficiency (p = 0.0000), duel success (p = 0.0000), tackles success (p = 0.0100), shots from counterattacks (p = 0.0460… Show more

“…An efficient defence play, in order to decrease the opponents’ free playing area, can be accomplished by reducing the distance between the vertical lines and narrowing the space in width ( Moura et al, 2012 ; Sarmento et al, 2018 ; Lepschy et al, 2021 ). This tendency towards compactness of the defence players is exactly what leads to an increase in the space behind the defence line and results in the open positions on the lateral sides.…”

“…Likewise, Tenga et al (2010b) found that a counterattack is an effective way to be successful because it exploits imbalances in the opponent's defense to achieve penetration. Although whether ''possession play'' or ''direct play'' is more effective has long been disputed in football science, the majority of studies demonstrated that winning teams increased their use of direct play and counterattack, and decreased the use of maintenance, build-up, and sustained threat [15,22]. This is mainly because winning teams' reduction in these styles could be a focus on maintaining the advantage through defending, which results in reduced possession time.…”

“…Second, it has lately become even more apparent that institutions responsible for choosing the host of large sporting events boldly focus on poorer countries or countries transforming their economies under the pretext of giving a stimulus to their development. For this reason, in the twenty-first century, the Olympics and the largest football tournaments (FIFA, UEFA) were organized, among others, in China, South Africa, Ukraine, Russia, Brazil, and Poland (Bohlmann & van Heerden, 2008; Lepschy et al, 2021; Zawadzki, 2016). In both cases, it can be assumed that this will affect the valuation observed in stock markets.…”
