Privacy by design within a system for assisted living, personalised care, and wellbeing is crucial to protect users from misuse of the data collected about their health. Especially if the information is collected through audio–video devices, the question is even more delicate due to the nature of these data. In addition to guaranteeing a high level of privacy, it is necessary to reassure end users about the correct use of these streams. The evolution of data analysis techniques began to take on an important role and increasingly defined characteristics in recent years. The purpose of this paper is twofold: on the one hand, it presents a state of the art about privacy in European Active Healthy Ageing/Active Healthy Ageing projects, with a focus on those related to audio and video processing. On the other hand, it proposes a methodology, developed in the context of the European project PlatfromUptake.eu, to identify clusters of stakeholders and application dimensions (technical, contextual, and business), define their characteristics, and show how privacy constraints affect them. From this study, we then generated a Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats analysis in which we aim to identify the critical features connected to the selection and involvement of relevant stakeholders for the success of a project. Applying this type of methodology to the initial stages of a project allows understanding of which privacy issues could be related to the various stakeholder groups and which problems can then affect the correct development of the project. The idea is, therefore, to suggest a privacy-by-design approach according to the categories of stakeholders and project dimensions. The analysis will cover technical aspects, legislative and policies-related aspects also regarding the point of view of the municipalities, and aspects related to the acceptance and, therefore, to the perception of the safety of these technologies by the final end users.

Background: The massive use of digital technologies has created a wide number of opportunities to improve Active and Healthy Ageing (AHA) services and products and respond to the socioeconomic and healthcare challenges caused by the growing ageing population. Therefore, a considerable number of digital AHA platforms have been produced in recent years. These platforms are operational on similar services within the same domain, competing or complementing each other in most cases. This makes it difficult for service providers, developers, and public administrations to choose based on the available options and their benefits. Methods: Responding to the need of providing information on prioritization and understanding the real value of these platforms to support decision making on the correct selection, this study understands the different characteristics and differences of the currently available services platforms, to get a comprehensive view directly through the feedback of platforms owners (both developers and managers) with the participatory involvement of every of the stakeholders contributing in the AHA services provision and consumption. Results: The paper develops and applies the proposed methodology into a specific AHA use case. Our findings suggest that this method can be considered an effective framework to define a set of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to track the successful uptake and evolution of existing platforms thanks to the combination of the different stakeholders’ visions and interests at the different interventions levels. Conclusions: The proposed method led us to proposing a comprehensive list of KPIs, which has evolved along the process to a minimum set of KPIs, that are relevant for the methodologically measure the success of digital AHA platforms, according to four different perspectives: primary end-users, technological providers, end-users consumers and government, and at different levels of integration: user, community and municipalities.

The EU PlatformUptake project’s main goal is to investigate the usage of EU open and partly-open platforms in active and healthy aging (AHA) and ambient-assisted living (AAL) domains, from a software viewpoint. The aim of the project was to provide tools for a deeper interpretation and examination of the platforms, gather user feedback, and use it to improve the state-of-the-art approach in the AHA and AAL domains, and define instructions to enhance the platforms within the recommended order. The emphasis is on the software viewpoint for decision makers. In this paper, we present (i) the PlatformUptake methodology for AHA open platform assessments and its main objectives; (ii) clustering of the analyzed platforms; and (iii) the taxonomies generated from the text descriptions of the chosen platforms. With the use of the clustering tools, we present which platforms could be grouped together due to their similarities. Different numbers of clusters were obtained with two clustering approaches, resulting in the most informative two and four cluster groups. The platforms could be rather neatly presented in this way and, thus, potentially guide future platform structuring. Moreover, taxonomies, i.e., decision trees of platforms, were generated to easily determine each specific platform or to find platforms with the desired properties. Altogether, the computer comprehension of the platforms may be important additions to the human way of dealing with the AHA platforms, influencing future design, publications, related work, and research.
