Suburban revalorization: Residential infill and rehabilitation in Baltimore County’s older suburbs

Abstract: This paper is a critical examination of redevelopment in the older suburbs of Baltimore County, Maryland between 2000 and 2014. Using exploratory spatial analysis techniques and qualitative methods, we identify the location of concentrated forms of suburban redevelopment, capturing incremental changes to single-family suburban homes in the form of residential rehabilitation, and new construction as well as larger-scale infill in the form of single-family subdivisions and apartments. “…Stachuro [9] examined the behavioral implications of creating "eco-districts" with their own sustainable infrastructure within urban areas. Hanlon [10] concentrated on suburban re-development after decades of expansion in Baltimore, MD, USA. Sorrentino et al [11] and Sorrentino et al [12] used housing buildout in an urban-suburban watershed to determine the relative impacts of alternative development scenarios.…”

“…There are at least three ways that studies apply street-level images in empirical analysis for urban studies. First, street-level images have been used for virtual visits to sites (Curtis and Fagan, 2013; Hanlon and Airgood-Obrycki, 2018), as they are low-cost, time-efficient and user-friendly. In a seminal article on gentrification in Chicago, Hwang and Sampson (2014) explained how GSV could be used to detect cues of neighbourhood changes.…”
