“…There is robust neuropsychological evidence derived from multiple studies that problematic gaming patterns are associated with inhibitory control impairment 197 , supporting the notion that loss of control over gaming is a key feature of gaming disorder. Finally, a number of studies conducted on treatment-seeking cases showed that gaming disorder is frequently associated with heightened impulsivity, affective instability, and dysfunctional personality traits as assessed using psychometric questionnaires 148,198,199 .…”

“…Studies that include the administration of diagnostic interview schedules to identify co-occurring conditions have reported that individuals diagnosed with gaming disorder experienced negative consequences in multiple life areas 199,[205][206][207][208][209][210] . Many adolescent gaming disorder patients reported problems including reversal of day-night sleep-wake patterns, skipping meals due to gaming, physical violence toward others and hitting or breaking things when asked to stop or reduce gaming, poor school grades or work performance, and absence from school or work 201 .…”

“…While IGD research has not yet established a consensus "gold standard" method of clinical diagnosis, gold standards in other psychiatric disorders near-universally involve clinicians' evaluations, sometimes in conjunction with (semi-)structured interviews and/or self-report measures (Aboraya et al, 2005). Given the recency of IGD's proposal, however, results of clinical assessment in line with the DSM-5 comprise a relatively small portion of the literature (although for counter-examples see e.g., Starcevic et al;Granero et al, 2021). Instead, both IGD and distress are often measured using self-report measures alone, and the measurement and modelling of these is subject to substantial analytical flexibility.…”

“…IGD heterogeneity resonates with the view that there are multiple forms of IGD, but their neurobiological bases remain poorly understood. Recently, efforts to characterize IGD subgroups have included identifying clusters of personality features [6] or symptoms that tend to co‐occur [7]. These studies have defined two clusters: one cluster with less psychological symptomatology and dysfunctional personality profiles and one with more [7].…”
