Subthreshold membrane resonance in neocortical neurons

Abstract: 1. Using whole cell recording techniques, we studied subthreshold and suprathreshold voltage responses to oscillatory current inputs in neurons from the sensorimotor cortex of juvenile rats. 2. Based on firing patterns, neurons were classified as regular spiking (RS), intrinsic bursting (IB), and fast spiking (FS). The subthreshold voltage-current relationships of RS and IB neurons were rectifying whereas FS neurons were almost ohmic near rest. 3. Frequency response curves (FRCs) for neurons were determined by… Show more

“…Following Gutfreund et al (1995) (see also Hutcheon et al, 1996), the input impedance magnitude, ͉Z in ( f )͉, was calculated in current-clamp mode by injecting a 12 sec log chirp current and measuring the resulting voltage output. An example is shown in Figure 2.…”

“…This has been done in a variety of neuronal cell classes (Brumberg 2002, Carrandini et al 1996Hutcheon et al 1996;Nowak et al 1997;Hunter et al 1998;Volgushev et al 1998;Fellous et al 2001). Results suggest that cortical pyramidal neurons can be viewed as non-linear oscillators.…”

“…Results suggest that cortical pyramidal neurons can be viewed as non-linear oscillators. Additionally, subthreshold resonances intrinsic to the membrane have significant impact on the response properties of cortical neurons (Llinas 1991;Hutcheon et al 1996;Hunter et al 1998). This in turn could imply a certain degree of nonlinearity in the firing patterns of neurons in response to stimuli of varying frequencies.…”

“…A peak of Z( f ) shows that a neuron has subthreshold resonance, behaving as a bandpass filter. Subthreshold resonance is observed in some hippocampal and cortical pyramidal neurons (PNs) (Gutfreund et al, 1995;Hutcheon et al, 1996;Leung and Yu, 1998;Hu et al, 2002;Peters et al, 2005;Narayanan and Johnston, 2007) but not in others (Haas and White, 2002).…”
