Antecedentes. La contaminación por mercurio (Hg) producto del beneficio minero aurífero es un problema de índole ambiental, dada su capacidad de afectar los ecosistemas y la salud humana. Por lo cual, es fundamental proponer alternativas enfocadas en disminuir la contaminación producida principalmente al recurso hídrico, debido a la persistencia y permanencia de este metal pesado en el ambiente Objetivo. Evaluar la remoción de Hg y la carga orgánica del agua residual proveniente de un entable minero mediante un sistema de humedales de flujo subsuperficial horizontal. Métodos. Se realizó la caracterización fisicoquímica del agua residual minera, además, se diseñó y operó un sistema de tres humedales a los cuales se les varió el Tiempo de Retención Hidráulica (TRH) y la presencia o ausencia de Heliconia psittacorum, se evaluaron parámetros como pH, OD, turbidez, DBO 5 , DQO y Mercurio. Se aplicó una prueba estadística ANOVA con significancia del 95%. Resultados. El efluente minero arrojó concentraciones para DQO y Hg de 197 mg O 2 /L y 0,0021 mg/L, respectivamente, valores superiores a los permisibles por la normativa colombiana y de la EPA. Los humedales evaluados mostraron eficiencias de remoción para turbiedad, DBO 5 , DQO y Hg superiores al 98,44%, 93,10%, 71,52% y 91,03%, respectivamente. Las pruebas estadísticas sugieren que no existe diferencia significativa con respecto a la variación del TRH, pues los porcentajes de eficiencia de remoción del Hg para 2 y 4 días son relativamente similares Conclusiones. Los humedales de flujo subsuperficial horizontal y Heliconia psittacorum, son altamente eficientes en la remoción de Hg de aguas residuales de minería aurífera, consolidándose como una tecnología prometedora para la biorremediación ambiental.

This study evaluated the treatment efficiency of municipal wastewater from Phetchaburi in Thailand in an alternated 5-day flooding and 2-day drying wetland system with two plants species, namely, Canna indica and Heliconia psittacorum. The efficiencies of biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5) treatment were in the ranges of 90.5% ± 4.8% and 86.9% ± 7.3% for Canna and Heliconia, respectively. Those of chemical oxygen demand (COD) treatment were in the ranges of 75.5% ± 7.9% and 75.3% ± 9.0% for Canna and Heliconia, respectively. Both plants’ removal efficiencies of TN, NH4-N, and TP were greater than 40%. Lead and cadmium accumulation in both plants significantly differed between the upper and lower parts of the plants. However, the lead and cadmium accumulation in Heliconia were greater than their accumulation in Canna. Although Canna had a higher nutrient removal efficiency than Heliconia, there are many varieties of Canna in Thailand. These results indicate that the variety of Canna does not affect the nutrient removal efficiency. In conclusion, a wetland system with alternated flooding and drying conditions can be applied in communities where BOD5 and COD are the dominant wastewater pollution characteristics. Both ornamental plants are suitable absorbents for lead and cadmium, and although the accumulation is lower in Canna than in Heliconia for both heavy metals, the difference was not significant.

Constructed wetlands (CWs) are highly effective in wastewater treatment and have generated lines of research with a focus on technological development and implemented innovations. This work concentrates on the most recent technical and scientific advances that have obtained optimal results in the construction of CWs using sustainable materials and the use of ornamental plants and other aquatic plants. Efficiency is also documented through models and simulation with neural networks, the use of the random forest method, and the use of software such as MODFLOW, MODPATH, and COMSOL Multiphysics. The information shown is structured by geographical area and addresses regions of Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, South America, and Oceania. It is important to consider that the optimization and innovation of CW for pollutant removal may benefit developing countries that do not have sufficient infrastructure to meet the demand for municipal and industrial wastewater.
