Effect of graded levels of high-glucosinolate mustard (Brassica juncea) meal as substitute of soya-bean meal (SBM) in broiler rabbit diets was studied. Forty weaning rabbits of Soviet Chinchilla and White Giant breed were randomly allocated to one of four experimental diets containing mustard meal (MM) 0, 80, 160 and 245 g/kg. The experiment lasted for 8 weeks. MM had 54.8 mg total glucosinolates (TGLSs) per g dry matter (DM). Diets had TGLS 3.8, 8.4 and 11.98 mg/g DM in 80, 160 and 245 g MM diets, respectively. MM-incorporated diets had higher digestible and linearly (P , 0.01) higher metabolisable energy (ME) content. However, the effect on total tract apparent digestibility of DM, and crude protein was quadratic. Average daily gain (ADG) reduced (P , 0.05) linearly with increasing MM levels in diet, still 80 and 160 g MM diets had similar ADG compared to that of SBM diet. Caecum weight reduced linearly (P , 0.05) with increasing MM levels in diet. The pH of caecal content ranged between 5.85 and 6.19, total N between 1.19 and 1.48 (g per 100 g) and total volatile fatty acids between 4.7 and 5.8 mmol per 100 g, and they were not statistically different. NH 3 -N ranged between 31.2 and 39.0 mg per 100 ml, and reduced linearly (P , 0.05) while trichloroacetic acidprecipitable nitrogen increased linearly (P , 0.01, ranged between 114 and 247 mg per 100 ml) with increasing MM levels in diet. Blood haemoglobin, packed cell volume and lymphocytes were higher (quadratic effects, P , 0.05) on 245 MM diet, whereas white blood cell count reduced linearly (P , 0.01). Serum aspartate aminotransferase increased linearly (P , 0.01) while alanine aminotransferase and alkaline phosphatase activity, protein, erythrocytes sedimentation rate and red blood cell counts were not affected by MM. Serum Cu, Na and K content increased linearly (P , 0.05) with increasing MM levels. Liver Cu concentration showed quadratic (P , 0.05) increase. Rabbits tolerated 8.4 mg TGLS per g diet (160 g MM per kg) during active growth without any apparent effect on health and growth. It is concluded that MM can replace up to 66% SBM protein in rabbit feeding, whereas complete replacement of SBM with MM reduced feed intake and ADG by 23% and 13%, respectively. Further studies are required to confirm these inclusion levels and glucosinolate tolerance of rabbits.

From weaning (34 d of age) until slaughter (76 d), 216 hybrid rabbits were divided into six experimental groups and fed ad libitum six iso-protein (CP: 15.9% as-fed), iso-starch (9.1%) and iso-ADF (21.4%) diets formulated in a bi-factorial arrangement, with three soluble fi bre levels (LS: 5.8% vs. MS: 7.4% vs. HS: 8.5%) and two protein sources (Soy: soybean meal vs. Sun: sunfl ower meal). The increase in dietary soluble fi bre level linearly increased (P L <0.001) in vivo digestibility of dry matter (from 55.4 to 61.3%), gross energy and fi bre fractions (from 14.8 to 25.7% for acid detergent fi bre; from 40.3 to 49.2% for insoluble hemicelluloses; from 85.0 to 93.9% for soluble fi bre). Replacing soybean with sunfl ower meal tended to decrease crude protein digestibility (73.1 vs. 72.6%, P=0.058) and reduced acid detergent fi bre digestibility (22.0 vs. 18.4%, P<0.001), while improving ether extract digestibility (69.3 vs. 70.8, P<0.001). The nutritive values of the experimental diets increased with soluble fi bre level (digestible energy from 9.0 to 9.9 MJ/kg) regardless of the protein source. Intestinal mucosa traits at 56 d of age were not affected, while caecal pH linearly decreased (from 6.19 to 5.97; P L =0.017) with increasing dietary soluble fi bre. During the trial, health problems were moderate (mortality 3.4% and morbidity 15.6%) and not affected by feeding treatments. With increasing soluble fi bre level, rabbit daily weight gain and fi nal live weight linearly increased (P L =0.045) and feed conversion improved (from 3.55 to 3.30, P L <0.001). Protein source did not affect intestinal traits or growth performance. Slaughter results and meat quality were unaffected by feeding treatments.

RESUMOAvaliou-se o bagaço de cana-de-açúcar não tratado (BN) e tratado (BT) com 2, 4 e 6% de hidróxido de sódio (NaOH) na dieta para coelhos em crescimento. Os coeficientes de digestibilidade (CD) dos nutrientes do BN e BT foram determinados em delineamento inteiramente casualizado, com cinco tratamentos (ração básica e rações com 40% de bagaço com 0, 2, 4 e 6% de NaOH) e quatro repetições. Para obtenção dos valores de CD apenas do bagaço, e não da dieta total, adotou-se o método de substituição isométrica da dieta basal proposto por Matterson et al. (1965). A adição de NaOH ao bagaço não melhorou significativamente (P>0,05) os CD da matéria seca, proteína bruta, fibra em detergente neutro, fibra bruta e energia bruta e piorou significativamente (P=0,0023) o CD da fibra em detergente ácido (y = 20,042 -2,7615x, r 2 = 0,984). Concluiu-se que o tratamento do bagaço de cana-de-açúcar com NaOH não trouxe vantagens práticas sobre os valores de CD que justificassem o seu uso, já que a adoção dessa técnica demanda aumento de mão-de-obra e do custo da alimentação.Termos para indexação: Metodologia de avaliação de alimentos, nutrição animal. ABSTRACTThe NaOH treated sugar cane bagasse (BT) (2, 4 e 6%) and untreated cane bagasse (BN) was evaluated as rabbit diet ingredients. The digestion coefficients (CD) were determined in a completely randomized design, with five treatments (basic diet) and 40% bagasse diets (0, 2, 4 e 6% NaOH) and four replications, using substitution methodology (MATTERSON et al., 1965). The nutritive values of bagasse (DM, CP, NDF, CF and GE) were not significantly (P>0,05) affected by NaOH treatment, whereas AFD was significantly (P = 0,0023) linearly decreased by the chemical treatment (y = 20,042 -2,7615x , r 2 = 0,984). It was concluded that the treatment was not effective to improving the CD of sugar cane bagasse, being the practice not justifiable.
