A feeding trial was conducted to evaluate the effects of Spirulina (Arthrospira platensis) inclusion in experimental diets of juvenile Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). Iso-nitrogenous and iso-lipidic diets were prepared using a positive control diet (S0) and four basal diets with A. platensis at 30 % (S30), 45 % (S45), 60 % (S60), and 75 % (S75) inclusion levels. Experimental diets were randomly assigned to tanks (13.35 kg m −3 ) with initial body weight of 0.89±0.02 g in triplicates.The results of the feeding trial demonstrated significantly improved (P < 0.05) growth performance and hepatosomatic and viscerosomatic indices of fish fed S30. Blood chemical profile also indicated desirable values in fish fed A. platensis diets as compared to fish fed S0. On the contrary, fish fed S75 exhibited significantly reduced fish growth. Blood chemical analysis showed significant difference (P<0.05) in levels of plasma triglyceride. Results of the present work indicate that 30 % A. platensis inclusion is deemed the optimal level of dietary replacement for increased growth performance, improved feed utilization efficiency, and enhanced overall health status of Nile tilapia juveniles.

Bio-floc shrimp culture systems have been investigated in an attempt to optimize water use and prevent the discharge of effluent into the environment. The importance of microalgae in maintaining water quality and nutrition of the shrimp is well known in conventional systems; however, its maintenance amid bio-flocs and its role in the shrimp performance in this system are still poorly understood. The aim of this study was to evaluate the contribution of diatoms in the performance of Litopenaeus vannamei reared during the nursery phase in intensive system with minimal water exchange. Shrimp (0.31 ± 0.10 g) were reared among diatoms, bio-flocs and the combination of the two forming the mixture medium. The survival of shrimp was high in all treatments (90-97%). However, the shrimp reared among diatoms showed higher weight gain (P \ 0.05) and feed conversion ratio significantly more efficient, reaching a value of 0.47. The results indicate the importance of diatoms in bio-floc culture systems and points out to future research in an attempt to maintain a constant presence of these microalgae in culture medium without requiring successive inoculations.

RESUMOEste estudo teve como objetivo comparar o efeito de diferentes densidades celulares da microalga Thalassiosira weissflogii na alimentação de larvas de Litopenaeus vannamei, e avaliar sua utilização em escala comercial. Para avaliar a densidade algal adequada foram utilizados três tratamentos, 0,5; 1,0 e 2,0 x 10 4 células/mL. Na avaliação em escala comercial comparou-se a utilização de T. weissflogii com Chaetoceros muelleri, quanto à metamorfose, sobrevivência e peso final. Os resultados mostraram que a densidade de 2,0 x 10 4 cels/mL apresentaram menor sobrevivência e a água do cultivo maiores concentrações de nutrientes e contagem de bactérias totais em comparação com os tratamentos de 0,5 e 1,0 x 10 4 células/mL (p < 0,05), que não apresentaram diferenças estatísticas entre si (p > 0,05) para os parâmetros analisados. Não foram observadas diferenças significativas nos parâmetros analisados entre as duas espécies de microalgas utilizadas na larvicultura comercial (p > 0,05). Os resultados mostraram que a densidade de 2,0 x 10 4 cels/mL de T. weissflogii pode causar prejuízos para a larvicultura de camarões, devido à degradação da qualidade da água causada pela introdução de maiores volumes de inóculos de microalgas, gerando acúmulo de nutrientes e o aumento da carga bacteriana. O uso de T. weissflogii em larviculturas comerciais apresentou resultados satisfatórios para a produção de larvas de L. vannamei.
