Archaeological indicators of cognitively modern behaviour become increasingly prevalent during the African Middle Stone Age (MSA). Although the exploitation of ochre is viewed as a key feature of the emergence of modern human behaviour, the uses to which ochre and ochre-based mixtures were put remain ambiguous. Here we present the results of an experimental study exploring the efficacy of ochre as a topical photoprotective compound. This is achieved through the in vivo calculation of the sun protection factor (SPF) values of ochre samples obtained from Ovahimba women (Kunene Region, Northern Namibia) and the Palaeozoic Bokkeveld Group deposits of the Cape Supergroup (Western Cape Province, South Africa). We employ visible spectroscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (ED-XRF), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and granulometric analyses to characterise ochre samples. The capacity of ochre to inhibit the susceptibility of humans to the harmful effects of exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UVR) is confirmed and the mechanisms implicated in the efficacy of ochre as a sunscreen identified. It is posited that the habitual application of ochre may have represented a crucial innovation for MSA humans by limiting the adverse effects of ultraviolet exposure. This may have facilitated the colonisation of geographic regions largely unfavourable to the constitutive skin colour of newly arriving populations.

Recent research shows that clay minerals can be used in sunscreens as UV filters instead of inorganic and organic compounds, which can cause unexpected photo-catalytic effect and damage the skin surface and can be absorbed into the skin and cause allergic reactions. In this study UV transmittance of suspensions containing clay fraction (mostly illite) and 50% glycerol/water solution was measured. Samples without chemical treatment, with removed carbonates and iron containing minerals (oxides and hydroxides) were analyzed. Results showed that the chemical treatment decreased UV protection ability. The highest increase of UV transmittance was observed for samples after removal of iron containing minerals. UV transmittance decreased by 10-14% when the concentration of clay fraction in the suspension was increased from 20 to 30 mass%. Samples with the highest concentration of iron oxide showed also the highest UV protection ability.

Resumo Bentonita é um tipo de argila composta principalmente de montmorilonita. Possui excelentes propriedades de adsorção e como principais características a alta capacidade de troca catiônica, capacidade de inchamento, grande área superficial e baixa condutividade hidráulica. A bentonita é utilizada como matéria-prima em mais de 40 aplicações industriais. O processo de liofilização consiste na secagem de um produto, passando pela etapa de sublimação, para remoção da água contida utilizando baixa pressão e impedindo qualquer atividade biológica e reações químicas. Ele é eficiente em características como contração do produto, perda de voláteis, decomposição térmica, ações enzimáticas e desnaturação de proteínas, se comparado com outros meios de desidratação, ou seja, mantém a integridade do produto. Neste trabalho, foi avaliado o comportamento e realizada a caracterização de bentonita sódica mais ativa e sódica menos ativa, antes e após o processo de liofilização. Considerou-se como mais ativa a bentonita que apresentou maior capacidade de troca catiônica - CTC relacionada aos íons sódio (Na+). Foram feitas análises químicas e mineralógicas, de capacidade de troca catiônica, análise microbiológica, FTIR e capacidade de inchamento. Observou-se um incremento de aproximadamente 32% na capacidade de inchamento da bentonita mais ativa após a liofilização.
