Subsequent Skin Cancers in Kidney and Heart Transplant Recipients after the First Squamous Cell Carcinoma

Abstract: Although the proportion of HTR developing new tumors is greater as compared with KTR, the mean number of tumors per patient is higher in KTR. This could be due to a longer immunosuppression in patients younger at transplantation.

“…9 Age at transplantation and duration and dosage of immunosuppression are major determinants of SCC development. 10,11 Furthermore, dosage of immunosuppression is a major determinant of the risk for SCC metastasis, which has an incidence of 1 to 4%. 9,12 The median survival after a diagnosis of poor-prognosis SCC is approximately 2 years.…”

“…16 In addition, habitual use of sunscreens and other photoprotection decreased the rate of subsequent SCCs after a first SCC in OTRs. 17 UV protection is therefore essential for both primary [10][11][12] and secondary prevention of NMSC, and this behaviour should be reinforced in healthy patients as well as in OTRs and others at elevated risk of skin cancer.…”

“…Sun exposure is an important risk factor for multiple lesions development. Fair skin of patients and light color of the hair and the eyes are predictive of multiple SCC development (Euvrard et al, 2006). Male sex is also a risk factor for multiple skin cancer development, especially the BCC.…”
