Subsequent Pregnancy Outcomes in Patients With Peripartum Cardiomyopathy

Abstract: Patients with a history of peripartum cardiomyopathy who recover LV function are at risk for a transient minor decrease in LV ejection fraction during future pregnancies, but obstetric and neonatal outcomes are often favorable.

“… 48 A characteristic of preeclampsia and peripartum cardiomyopathy is the recurrence rate, which follows a similar pattern in subsequent pregnancies. Early pre-eclampsia is considered to be the more severe phenotype, with a 34% risk of recurrence, 98 and in patients with PPCM these figures are 15–50%. 81 , 99 Despite the full recovery of some women, there is concern about the risk of recurrence of the condition during a subsequent pregnancy.…”

“…(Abou Moulig et al, 2018) Maternal and fetal outcomes are generally positive during future pregnancies. (Codsi et al, 2018) That said, about one-third of women who have had peripartum cardiomyopathy experience relapse in subsequent pregnancies. (Elkayam, 2014) At two years postpartum, maternal mortality ranges from 0% to 9%, with higher rates seen in women of African descent.…”
