Submillimeter-wave endfire slotline antennas

Abstract: A B S T R A C TEndfire slotline antennas have been integrated on a 1.75pm thick dielectric substrate. The thin substrate allows the upper frequency limit of the slotline antennas to be pushed beyond ITHz. Antennas have been fabricated and tested at 350 and SOZGHz. The patterns exhibit high directivity (15+/-ldB) and wide bandwidth. In the future, these antennas will be combined with SIS junctions for low noise astronomical receivers. “…The admittance Y 0 is indicative of the admittance caused by the propagating or zero-order mode. For single-element antenna analysis, Knorr's equivalent circuit model has been used to further match the antenna impedance Z A into a transformer followed by parallel-connected slot lines terminated by the cavity slot and the radiating tapered slot [41], [42]. In order to do an analysis of both the full structure and the strip line structure without slots, The ground-plane impedance Z T and the total stub reactance j(X m +X p ) can be determined by using the method of momentum (MoM) solver in the CST software.…”

“…In particular, after the field is coupled to the FS-LTSA, the effect of substrate radiation, surface-waves, and dispersion are mostly eliminated. This goal has been mostly achieved by [5] where substrate etching was used to create an antenna on a thin (<2µm) SiO 2 /Si 3 N 4 membrane. The antenna presented here has some distinct advantages over thin membrane antennas: the metallic-slit based antenna has lower conductor loss due to increased conductor surface area, it is less delicate due to the material and thickness, and the manufacturing process doesn't require harsh etchants (EDP, HF, etc).…”

“…The induced pulse distortion limits the ability for these antennas to function as a broadband THz time-domain spectrometer (THz-TDS) source. In [5,6] the undesired effects associated with the substrate are mitigated by using a slotline antenna on a thin dielectric membrane. This method functions well but has several issues: the resulting antenna is delicate, manufacturing requires harsh etchants, and the conductor loss is relatively high.…”
