SUBMILLIMETER H2O MEGAMASERS IN NGC 4945 AND THE CIRCINUS GALAXY

Abstract: We present 321 GHz observations of five active galactic nuclei (AGNs) from ALMA Cycle 0 archival data: NGC 5793, NGC 1068, NGC 1386, NGC 4945, and the Circinus galaxy. Submillimeter maser emission is detected for the first time toward NGC 4945, and we present a new analysis of the submillimeter maser system in Circinus. None of the other three galaxies show maser emission, although we have detected and imaged the continuum from every galaxy. Both NGC 4945 and Circinus are known to host strong (10 Jy) 22 GHz m… Show more

“…The velocity scale is radio LSR. the 183 GHz transition found here is much higher than that found for 321 GHz emission towards NCC 4945 at ∼10 L (Pesce et al 2016;Hagiwara et al 2016). We speculate that this is due to the very different energy requirements of the two lines.…”

“…In the literature, L13, page 3 of 4 A&A 592, L13 (2016) 22 GHz maser spectra do not display velocities much above 1000 km s −1 (e.g. G97; Pesce et al 2016;Hagiwara et al 2016). …”

“…In our observations, a highly redshifted velocity feature at V LSR =1138.6 kms 1 is marginally detected. In their analysis of this data set, Pesce et al (2016) note that this velocity range is impacted by higher atmospheric absorption resulting in a somewhat higher noise level, and so further observations are required to confirm this feature.…”

“…Ellingsen et al (2014) observe offsets of 180 and 300 pc for the northeast and southwest components, respectively. Although the H 2 O maser emission observed in NGC 4945 is not physically associated with the 36.2 GHz maser emission, the redshifted components share an overlapping velocity range (Greenhill et al 1997;Hagiwara et al 2016;Humphreys et al 2016;Pesce et al 2016).…”
