Objective Total parotidectomy yields a large surgical defect that leads to both cosmetic and functional deficits which can be addressed with reconstruction. We evaluated the role of a pedicled submental flap for this reconstruction. Methods We reviewed all submental flap reconstructions that were performed for total parotidectomy defects between 2014 and 2016. Data regarding harvest technique, postoperative complications, flap survival, and adjuvant treatment details were recorded. Subjective information regarding retained volume after reconstruction was also obtained. Results During the time period, eight patients were identified and in all cases the patients underwent total parotidectomy with facial nerve sacrifice. All patients were discharged within 2 days of hospitalization with no complications or concerns regarding the viability of the flap. All but one patient had radiation therapy. Results with 9.9‐ to 37.5‐month follow‐up (mean 22.0 months) show limited volume loss without major contour defect or ear deformity in the follow‐up period. Conclusions Submental flap reconstruction is a feasible and reliable method for total parotidectomy defect. The inclusion of the mylohyoid muscle aids flap reliability and adds bulk. Inclusion of the dermis helps contour the overlying skin. The flap does not add morbidity or increased complexity intraoperatively or postoperatively. Level of Evidence 4

Objective The present study aimed to investigate the expression of Numb in ovarian cancer tissues and to assess the effect of Numb on cell proliferation, invasion, and EMT in ovarian cancer. Methods Real-time PCR and Western blotting were used to detect the mRNA and protein expression of Numb, PAK1, β-catenin, and epithelial–mesenchymal transition (EMT)-related proteins. MTT was employed to check the effect of Numb on proliferation of ovarian cancer cells. Transwell assay was performed to examine the functions of Numb and PAK1 on migration and invasion of ovarian cancer cells. Results The Numb expression was significantly downregulated while PAK1 and β-catenin were significantly upregulated in both ovarian cancer tissues and cell lines. Silencing of Numb promoted cell proliferation, migration, invasion, and EMT in ovarian cancer cell lines while overexpressed Numb reversed the above effects. Moreover, the EMT process induced by the inhibition of Numb was regulated through Numb-mediated PAK1/β-catenin signaling pathway. Conclusion Numb was downregulated and associated with cell proliferation, invasion, and EMT in ovarian cancer through regulating PAK1/β-catenin signaling, providing a novel potential biomarker and potential therapeutic target for ovarian cancer.

Background: We evaluated the clinical applications of the reconstruction of postoperative defects of the oral cavity using contralateral submental artery flaps. Methods: A retrospective study of 18 patients with postoperative intraoral cancer defects reconstructed with contralateral submental artery perforator flaps between October 2018 and October 2019 in our department was conducted. The defect area, flap size, and complications were evaluated. Results: All patients were diagnosed based on pathological examinations: 2 with adenoid cystic carcinoma and 16 with squamous cell carcinoma. The submental artery perforator flap used for simultaneous repair was 8 to 15 cm in length and 4 to 6.5 cm in width. The survival rate of flap reconstruction was 100% with no donor site complications. Conclusions: Contralateral submental artery flap reconstruction is a suitable alternative for moderate to large intraoral defects, postoperative mouth floor defects, and oral cavity composite defects of oral malignant tumors without contralateral lymph node metastases.
