“…23) were formed in post-glacial time because they offset scour marks left by the moving glaciers. They have throws as large as 30 m (Lundqvist and Lagerbäck, 1976) and indicate that earthquakes as large as magnitude 8 (Arvidsson, 1996) had occurred near the end of deglaciation around 9000 years ago (Lundqvist, 1986;Lundqvist and Saarnisto, 1995;Muir-Wood, 1989;Lagerbäck, 1979Lagerbäck, , 1990Mörner et al, 2000;Kotilainena and Hutri, 2004). This onset timing will be used to discriminate between different glacially induced seismo-tectonic models (Muir-Wood, 2000;Stewart et al, 2000).…”

“…Further, disturbed sedimentary structures, submarine slides and slumps, and debris-flow structures in the Gulf of Bothnia have been interpreted as indications of postglacial palaeoseismicity (Kotilainen & Hutri 2004;. Structures interpreted as indicating postglacial seismic activity occur also in Russian Karelia, in the Lake Onega and Lake Ladoga areas (Lukashov 1995), although the available evidence has not been compelling (Kuivamäki et al 1998).…”

“…In the Holocene sediments of the Baltic Sea, only a few failures related to earthquakes have been reported (Sviridov 1981;Vangkilde-Pedersen et al 1993). In a recent study (Kotilainen & Hutri 2004), ancient faults, slides and slumps recorded in high-resolution echo-sounding profiles in subaquatic Holocene Baltic Sea sediments at Olkiluoto were interpreted as indicators of early Holocene palaeoseismicity. These were the first and so far the only observations of postglacial fault movements in Quaternary sediments from southern Finland.…”

“…The close spatial relationship with the bedrock fracture zones may suggest that they were formed by reactivation of the fracture zones (Kotilainen & Hutri 2004). The scarcity or absence of organic material in these sediments makes accurate dating of the material by the radiocarbon method difficult.…”
