Mass spectrometry I Partial pressure I Oligomers I FragmentationTo determine the gaseous monoxide oligomers above an oxygen saturated tin melt, the gas phase in equilibrium with Sn(li) and Sn02(s) in the temperature range 820-1160 was investigated using a mass spectrometer and a Knudsen cell. In adjusting for equilibrium care must be taken to avoid the formation of a continuous oxide skin on the tin. In the order of their partial pressures the gas phase consisted of Sn404, Sn202, SnO followed by Sn606. The gas species Sn"0" was not found. Measurements on tin melts with varying oxygen contents showed that Sn,OJ and Sn5OJ were only fragment ions, the relevant molecules not existing to any recognizable extent. Furthermore, the ion currents of Sn2OJ and SnO+ measured were much distorted by fragmentation. From the measured values
