Sublethal effects of tributyltin oxide on the dogwhelk Nucella lapillus

Abstract: ABSTRACT. The sublethal effects of tributyltin oxide (TBT) at concentrations of 2 to 128 ng 1-' in sea water on imposex development, weight, activity and feeding rate of the adult common dogwhelk Nucella lapillus (L.) were investigated over 12 mo under conditions conforming to the UK Good Laboratory Practice standard. TBT promoted irnposex development, with a no-effect concentration of c 2 ng I-' for exposure of 6 mo or more. The degree of imposex d~d not exceed levels w h~c h caused sterility in any treatment… Show more

“…On the date of re-sampling, non-tagged adult dogwhelks (n = 40) were collected at the same areas for imposex determination. The relative penis size index (RPSI) is the mean bulk of the female penis (length 3 ) expressed as a percentage of the mean bulk of the male penis (length 3 ) in a sample (Davies et al 1997). The vas deferens stage index (VDSI), which is an index for the individual stage of the development of a vas deferens in the female, was determined as described by Gibbs et al (1987).…”

“…TBT and its degradation products will persist in aquatic sediments causing widespread contamination of the environment (Iwata et al, 1995;Tanabe, 1999;Antizar-Ladislao, 2008). The use of TBT, which is regulated internationally, can cause high toxicity, resulting in undesirable effects in non-target marine organisms, such as increase in shell malformation, imposex, and population decline in gastropods (Beaumont and Budd, 1984;Alzieu et al, 1986;Dyrynda, 1992;Davies et al, 1997). TBT is also toxic to mammalian cells (Antizar-Ladislao, 2008;Kotake, 2012).…”
