Subjective Response to Alcohol as a Research Domain Criterion

Abstract: The approach recommended herein is largely consistent with the Research Domain Criteria (RDoC) initiative across the National Institute of Mental Health. The defining feature of such domains is that they inform behavior yet be amenable to examination through multiple units of analysis, such as molecular, genetic, circuit-level, and behavioral measurements. To that end, we contend that subjective response to alcohol represents a behaviorally and biologically plausible phenotype upon which to build using the RDo… Show more

“…A final goal of this study was to examine whether P3 reactivity to smoking cues was related to low alcohol sensitivity, a trait associated with risk for alcohol use disorder (see Ray et al, 2016; Trim et al, 2009) and with exaggerated P3 to alcohol cues (Bartholow, et al, 2007, 2010). We found that lower alcohol sensitivity was associated with differentially larger P3 to smoking cues.…”

“…Subjective response (SR) to alcohol, which refers to one's subjective experiences of the pharmacological effects of alcohol, and impulsivity, a personality trait defined by a failure to delay rewards and to control thoughts and behaviors, are two well-established predictors of problematic drinking (Dick et al, 2010;Ray et al, 2016). There are two predominant views of SR as a risk factor for alcohol use disorder (AUD).…”

“…Forced alcohol administration and alcohol cue-reactivity are reliable methods used to measure subjective response to alcohol and alcohol craving, respectively (Ray et al, 2016). However, several promising pharmacotherapies for AUD have not reduced the positive subjective effects of alcohol in the laboratory (reviewed elsewhere, e.g.…”

“…However, several promising pharmacotherapies for AUD have not reduced the positive subjective effects of alcohol in the laboratory (reviewed elsewhere, e.g. Ray et al, 2016). Thus, IVM could feasibly have utility in treating AUD without affecting subjective response to alcohol.…”
