Subdiaphragmatic Bronchogenic Cysts: A Comprehensive Review of the Literature

Abstract: Bronchogenic cysts are foregut-derived developmental anomalies most commonly encountered in the mediastinum and rarely in the abdomen or retroperitoneally. A comprehensive review of the English-language literature of subdiaphragmatic bronchogenic cysts (sBCs) revealed only 48 reported cases of sBC. Although most cases are incidentally discovered, preoperative differential diagnosis often includes tumors with malignant potential and necessitates surgical resection to obtain a definitive diagnosis. “…The predominant locations include the hilar and middle mediastinal area, whereas extrathoracic and subdiaphragmatic bronchogenic cysts are rare ( 15 ). There are <100 subdiaphragmatic bronchogenic cyst cases reported in the literature ( 17 ), but cases of cysts in the gastric wall are rare. Gastric bronchogenic cysts exhibit a higher prevalence in females (female to male ratio, 21:14), with a median age of development at 43 years old.…”

“…3 Subdiaphragmatic bronchogenic cysts, though, are extremely unusual; fewer than 50 cases have been reported. 4 In contrast to the bronchogenic cyst, alimentary duplication cysts contain digestive epithelium in lieu of respiratory epithelium and do not contain cartilage. Although these may involve the foregut, they are most prevalent in the small intestine.…”
