“…A total of 135,602 patients were included in our analysis with 47,322 patients with NAFLD and 88,280 non-NAFLD controls. NAFLD defined by liver biopsy [ 44 , 82 , 84 , 86 , 87 , 90 , 92 ] was found in seven studies, and by non-invasive methods, including ultrasonography [ 31 - 43 , 45 - 81 , 83 , 85 , 86 , 88 , 89 , 91 , 93 ] in 57 studies and CT scan [ 94 ] in one study. All studies were assessed to have a high (n=46) or moderate (n=18) quality based on the JBI Critical Appraisal Checklist assessment tool ( Supplementary Table 1 ).…”

“…Therefore, our results may hypothesize on the fact that while isolated, NAFLD and HT may promote the onset of very early vascular alterations they are able to create an evident vascular damage only when coexist, speculating on their synergistic effect. The association between NAFLD and both atherosclerosis and arterial stiffness is well established as depicted by the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis cohort, where the presence of NAFLD was associated with a higher CD and cIMT (47) or by a more recent study, where NAFLD was significantly associated with overt carotid atherosclerosis and arterial stiffness (48). Furthermore, other observational studies reported that NAFLD led to an increased risk of endothelial dysfunction and atherosclerosis in adult male patients, independently of MS (49,50).…”

“…More recent studies also report associations between fibrosis and atherosclerosis measures cIMT and PWV. A case-control study of fibrosis (ie, not including steatosis alone) in adults aged 30–70 years (n=213 with fibrosis) by Taharboucht et al 32 also reported greater cIMT and greater carotid-femoral PWV in the presence of fibrosis, even after the adjustment for age, sex, smoking, abdominal obesity, overall obesity, hypertension, dyslipidemia, GGT, ALT, insulin resistance, and CRP. These findings by Taharboucht et al 32 are similar to those reported in the present work.…”
