“…Cytochrome oxidase may be confined entirely to mitochondria (SCHNEIDER and HOGEBOOM, 1951;BRODY, WANG and BAIN, 1952) so that similarity of the Mg-ATPase pattern to that of the oxidase presumably means that Mg-ATPase activity may be associated largely with the same organelle. -Differential centrifugation studies of brain tissue also indicate this (DEUL and MCILWAIN, 1961). Mitochondria of brain (LAGNADO, BALAZS and RICHTER, 1959) and other organs appear to contain several Mg-ATPases with different pH optima and different relationships to the electron transport chain.…”

DEUL and MCILWAIN (1961) and SCHWARTZ, BACHELARD and MCILWAIN (1962) found that Na-K ATPase as well as Ca-ATPase activities per unit protein were concentrated in the microsomal fraction; when this fraction was subfractionated, the Na-K ATPase was associated with cell membrane structures rather than with RNA granules; furthermore, the fraction richest in Na-K ATPase was also enriched in AChE. These findings are consistent with localization of Na-K ATPase in plasma membranes and/or endoplasmic reticulum.…”
