Subacute Sclerosing Panencephalitis in Children: The Archetype of Non-Vaccination

Abstract: Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) is a late complication of measles virus infection that occurs in previously healthy children. This disease has no specific cure and is associated with a high degree of disability and mortality. In recent years, there has been an increase in its incidence in relation to a reduction in vaccination adherence, accentuated by the COVID-19 pandemic. In this article, we take stock of the current evidence on SSPE and report our personal clinical experience. We emphasise that,… Show more

“…If a child who has been immunized contracts subacute sclerosing panencephalitis, the infection was most likely contracted before the age of 1 year. 46 Pregnant women, immunocompromised children, and visitors are also at risk of developing subacute sclerosing panencephalitis, and should all be immunized against measles. 51 Having 95% of the population with anti-measles antibodies is an ideal method for eradicating the measles virus from a population.…”

“…The pandemic had limited immunization services, which prevented millions of people from getting their measles disease, increasing their susceptibility to being infected with measles. Despite an increase in potential test subjects in trials regarding SSPE, the safety precautions for COVID-19 limit any in-person activities, which is vital for discovering an effective treatment for SSPE [ 27 ].…”

“…A panencefalite esclerosante subaguda (PEES) é doença rara, de caráter progressivo, degenerativo e fatal que afeta o sistema nervoso central. 1 Ela ocorre devido à infecção causada por variantes genéticas do vírus do sarampo, que interferem na síntese da proteína M (matriz), tornando-a disfuncional e impedindo que sua maturação ocorra normalmente. 2 Após a primeira infecção, o vírus permanece latente por um período de 6-8 anos dentro dos neurônios e oligodendrócitos.…”
