Dexamethasone (glucocorticoid) was recently shown to be a life-saving drug for the treatment of SARS-CoV-2 disease. Water and sediments can be contaminated by sewage treatment plants when this product is widely used. Accordingly, we evaluated the effects of dexamethasone as pharmaceutical residue on Clarias gariepinus, following exposure and post-exposure recovery on blood biochemical, antioxidant, and cytokine markers. Three experimental groups were examined. Control, fish exposed to 0.3 mg/L of dexamethasone, and fish exposed to 3 mg/L of dexamethasone for 7 days, followed by a 15-days recovery period. Hematological indices, such as red blood cell number, hemoglobin (Hb), platelets, mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration, and large lymphocytes, were significantly declined following the exposure to dexamethasone compared to control. In contrast, hematocrit (Ht), mean corpuscular volume, monocytes, small lymphocytes, and mean corpuscular hemoglobin increased significantly depending on the dose–concentration. Liver and kidney functions, other biochemical parameters (albumin and globulin), cortisol, and cytokine (IL-1β and IL-6) concentrations increased significantly after exposure to dexamethasone compared to control. Antioxidants and acetylcholinesterase enzymes were significantly decreased in catfish treated with dexamethasone cumulatively with doses. After a recovery period, blood biochemical, antioxidant, and cytokine markers were still elevated compared with the control group. In conclusion, dexamethasone at concentrations present in water bodies causes deleterious effects on blood biomarkers, biochemical, and antioxidant as well as immune upregulation in catfish until after depuration period.

Tricyclazole, a systemic fungicide is recommended to treat of diseases in irrigated rice. Channa punctatus (Bloch) is a freshwater fish also found in paddy fields. This maiden study was designed to evaluate acute toxicity of tricyclazole and its responses of certain biomarker enzymes in Channa punctatus. By regression analysis method, 24, 48, 72 and 96hr-LC50 dose of tricyclazole was calculated 54.30, 36.76, 32.63 and 25.06 mg l-1 respectively. The range of LC50 dose indicates highly toxic nature of tricyclaozole. Fish were then exposed to 0.25 and 1.25 mg l-1 sublethal dose of tricyclazole for short term (24, 48 and 96 hours) and long term (15, 30 and 45 days) exposure and the alterations of enzyme activities were determined. Alkaline phosphatase activities exposed to 0.25 mg l-1 were increased insignificantly (p>0.05) after 24 hours but increased significantly (p less than 0.05) to 0.25 and 1.25 mg l-1 tricyclazole at all other treatments. Alanine transaminase and aspartate transaminase increased significantly (p less than 0.05) in response to tricyclazole during both exposures. These findings may be used in the assessment of the potential risk of tricyclazole on food chain and aquatic ecosystems.

The acute and subchronic toxicity of diazinon and sodium benzoate to the Nile tilapia fish, Oreochromis niloticus L. 60 g weight were studied. The obtained results showed that the LC 50 after 24, 48, 72 and 96 hr., post treatment to the insecticide diazinon were 8.377, 6.852, 6.200 and 5.679 mg/l, respectively. Exposed fish to sublethal concentration of diazinon (0.56 mg/l) and sodium benzoate at 150 mg/l for 21days caused some biochemical and histopathological changes in some blood components and organs. Diazinon increased alanine amino transferase (ALT), aspartate amino transferase (AST), glucose, total protein, albumin, creatinine and cholesterol activities, while acetylcholinesterase (AchE) and uric acid were decreased. Sodium benzoate caused an increase of ALT, AST, glucose, total protein, albumin, creatinine, uric acid and cholesterol activities. The histopathological studies showed degeneration of hepatocytes, congestion of blood vessels and revealed degenerative changes on some organs and cystic dilatation of some renal tubules together with congestion of renal blood vessels and mild to moderate lymphocytic infiltration were detected compared with control fish (untreated)
