The Effectiveness-Number of Transfer Unit method (ε-NTU method) was applied to determine the overall mass transfer coefficient, KLa, of operating gas-liquid absorbers treating Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). This method requires the knowledge of the operating conditions (gas flow rate, QG; liquid flow rate, QL; scrubber volume V), the measurement of gaseous concentrations at the inlet, CGin, and at the outlet, CGout, of the contactor (in order to determine the effectiveness of the absorber ε) and the calculation of the Henry coefficient of the VOC between the gas and the liquid phases (HVOC). Coupled with the “equivalent absorption capacity” concept, the ε-NTU method was used to determine KLa of absorbers contacting a gas and a mixture of water and a Non Aqueous Phase, successfully. The method, validated from literature data for configurations countercurrent scrubbers and stirred tank reactors, could be used to simply determine the overall mass transfer coefficient of systems for which the standard KLa determination methods still remain non-reliable or inaccurate (viscous solvents, mixture of immiscible liquids, fermentation broths…).

BACKGROUND Studies on the removal of styrene from airstreams carried out in pilot‐scale biotrickling filters (BTF) are still scarce thus making its industrial application difficult. Moreover, it seems necessary to develop a comprehensive description of the phenomena occurring in the bioreactor that could be used as a tool for BTF design and performance prediction. RESULTS The removal of styrene from airstreams in a pilot‐scale biotrickling filter (BTF) inoculated with Pseudomonas sp. E‐93486 bacteria was investigated (operational parameters: Vg*= 100–150 m3 h−1, VL*= 8 m3 h−1, Cs0= 0.2–1 g−3, EBRTs = 41–62 s, T = 303 K). The experiments performed during a period of more than 120 days confirmed high effectiveness of the examined process; RE = 78–94.2% was obtained for all the sets of operational parameters. The experimental database was exploited to validate the three mathematical models of the process. All the tested models approximate very well the experimental data; the mean percentage error of the RE value prediction did not exceed 3%. CONCLUSION The formulated approximate simple one‐substrate model (SOSM) described the investigated process with excellent accuracy (eY = 2.72%) and was numerically relatively simple. Therefore, this model was recommended as a useful tool for modelling the biodegradation processes of moderately hydrophobic compounds carried out in a BTF. © 2018 Society of Chemical Industry

BACKGROUND Thermophilic waste air biofiltration was developed to overcome the often observed drop in pollutant removal efficiency caused by classical reactor overheating above the mesophilic temperature range. To date, only a few studies have been reported on thermophilic biofiltration of airborne hydrophobic pollutants. In this work, a bubble column reactor (BCR) operated at 50 °C was used to treat waste air contaminated by a mixture of gasoline/kerosene range n‐alkanes with a microbial consortium acquired from burning coal dumps. RESULTS Several strategies were used to increase the low pollutant removal efficiency initially observed. Of these, only the addition of NAP (silicone oil) to the reactor led to increased removal efficiency, due to formation of water‐in‐oil emulsion. Analysis of the microbial consortium revealed bacteria from the Paenibacilaceae family (FN667384) and unidentified thermophilic fungi (HQ693517.1) to be the dominant organisms within the analyzed category, with 48% and 99% abundance, respectively. In the presence of NAP, longer‐chain n‐alkanes (C10–C12) were degraded efficiently, unlike their shorter‐chain homologs. After 7–10 days, the degradation of shorter‐chain C7–C8 n‐alkanes was observed at the expense of their longer‐chain homologs. CONCLUSION A two‐phase thermophilic BCR proved successful in treating an airborne n‐alkane mixture. With the NAP addition, the apparent mass transfer limitations were overcome, creating a suitable environment for thermophilic hydrocarbon biodegradation. As a result, efficient degradation of longer‐chain n‐alkanes was enabled upon emulsification, whereas the removal of shorter‐chain C7–C8 hydrocarbons occurred later, most likely as a consequence of the biomass adaptation. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry
