Although anecdotal evidence is easily found, little research has been done on the role of CE in student development in the context of the Eastern Cape, South Africa, with a particular focus on the role of student volunteerism. This chapter presents a research project proposal developed by the coordinator of the volunteering programme (the Engaged Citizen Programme) at an HEI in the Eastern Cape in an attempt to answer important questions and to document the journey that culminated in this project proposal. Taking into consideration that this volun teering programme takes place at an HEI, Rhodes University, the relationship between CE and higher education is the starting point of this discussion.HEIs play an important intellectual role in, and are important economic resources to, their communities.
