Studying on the strictly self-compatibility mechanism of ‘Liuyefeitao’ peach (Prunus persica L.)

Abstract: Peach (Prunus persica L.) generally exhibits self-pollination, however, they can also be pollinated by other varieties of pollen. Here we found two varieties that are different from other peaches: ‘Daifei’ and ‘Liuyefeitao’. ‘Daifei’ produces less pollen, which needs artificial pollination, honeybee pollination, and the fruit setting depends on other varieties of peach pollen. ‘Liuyefeitao’ exhibits strictly self-pollination, hence pollen from other species is rejected. To explore the mechanism of this phenome… Show more

“…To further assess the accuracy of the FCHL genome assembly, collinearity analysis between the assembled FCHL genome and the ‘Lovell’ reference genome was also carried out with Minimap2 software (Fig. 1 c; Table 2 ) [ 16 , 18 ]. The results showed good collinearity of the two genomes along the eight chromosomes and 1563 syntenic regions, which contained 194.81 Mb (81.49%) of FCHL genome sequences and 197.03 Mb (86.64%) of ‘Lovell’ genome sequences.…”

“…Fei Cheng peach has a cultivation history of more than 1200 years and mainly includes two cultivars, ‘Fei Cheng Hong Li’ (FCHL) and ‘Fei Cheng Bai Li’ (FCBL), which were collected as representative local varieties and categorized as belonging to a landrace group during the phylogenetic analysis of 84 peach accessions in a previous study [ 15 ]. Due to the influence of the potential S gene, Feicheng peach has strict self-pollination characteristics [ 16 ], and its genome cannot be integrated with the genomes of other peach cultivars, leading to a homozygous genome for this peach. As an ancient landrace, Fei Cheng peach is expected to have distinct genomic differences from modern cultivated varieties.…”

“…This phenomenon resembles a late acting self-incompatibility, and supported by the fact that FS 25 had a very low pollen viability (Table 4). Meanwhile FS 26 produced relatively low seedless fruit following self-pollination (Table 5) indicating the higher self-compatibility levels (Liu et al, 2018)however, they can also be pollinated by other varieties of pollen. Here we found two varieties that are different from other peaches: 'Daifei' and 'Liuyefeitao'.…”

“…Facultative or stimulative parthenocarpy occurs when seedless fruits are produced only when pollination takes place (Mesejo et al, 2013;Rezaldi et al, 2019). The advantage of having a parthenocarpic cultivar is due to a more stable fruit production even when pollination is lacking (Liu et al, 2018).…”
