Studying coopetition in a wine industry context: directions for future research

Abstract: Purpose -The purpose of this paper is to highlight the theoretical and methodological value of studying coopetition (the interplay between cooperation and competition) in a wine industry context.Design/methodology/approach -Key publications surrounding wine industries across multiple countries were reviewed to understand how the wine industry is a highly-appropriate empirical context to investigate coopetition. Findings -The findings revealed that the wine industry is a highly-suitable empirical context for re… Show more

“…When investigating coopetition, it is important for scholars to select an empirical context that is highly-cooperative and highly-competitive (Crick, 2018b). That is, coopetition is the interplay between cooperation and competition, whereby, organizations collaborate with their competitors to improve their performance (Rosenfeld, 1996;Ritala, 2012;Bengtsson and Raza-Ullah, 2016).…”

“…For instance, some authors have investigated coopetition using data from high-tech 1 Scholars should select a highly-cooperative and highly-competitive empirical context to investigate coopetition because they can use such a setting to understand how cooperative and competitive forces integrate (Crick, 2018b). Without such industry dynamics, it could be difficult to assess the antecedents and consequences of coopetition activities, especially with quantitative data, where there may be little variance.…”

“…Additionally, not all industries host companies that are prepared to engage in different forms of coopetition, as competitiveness often outweighs any cooperation (Raza-Ullah et al , 2014). Hence, it is important for researchers to locate a suitable empirical context for studying coopetition, but nonetheless, theory should drive the use of a coopetition-oriented empirical context (Crick, 2018b).…”

“…In terms of an empirical context, it is important to study coopetition an industry (or industries) that is both highly cooperative and highly competitive (Bengtsson and Kock, 2000; Rusko, 2011; Bengtsson and Johansson, 2014). That is, coopetition is the interplay between cooperation and competition, meaning that it is important to investigate such activities where cooperative and competitive forces are at play (Crick, 2018c). For example, academics have studied coopetition in agricultural markets, such as the wine industry (Crick, 2015; Granata et al , 2018).…”
