Study the precision of creating 3D structure modeling form terrestrial laser scanner observations

Abstract: Laser scanner has become widely used nowadays for several applications in civil engineering. An advantage of laser scanner as compared to other geodetic instruments is its capability of collecting hundreds or even thousands of point per second. Terrestrial laser scanner allows acquiring easy and fast complex geometric data from building, machines, objects, etc. Several experimental and field tests are required to investigate the quality and accuracy of scanner points cloud and the 3D geometric models derived f… Show more

“…In practice, the 3D scanning technology that allows the direct acquisition of coordinates of feature points on the surface, often struggles to meet the stringent precision requirements [11,12]. For vertical and regular-shaped structures, technologies like total stations and GPS are employed to acquire the coordinate data of surface feature points [13][14][15].…”

“…This will lead to a huge cloud of 3D points for the scanned object by processing this cloud to create a three-dimensional model of the object produced. One of terrestrial laser scanner advantages that its accuracy reaches few millimeter, laser scanner records data vertically and horizontally and making a model of the object that contains inside and outside the building in all its details and reviewing it once, and this cannot be done by any other means even if by video as you cannot see the model directly broader [5][6][7][8][9][10][11]. Terrestrial laser scanning does not require hanging platforms and enabling assessment of surface imperfections with a sub millimeter resolution [1,3].…”

“…Nowadays, terrestrial laser scanner has many application in civil engineering community such as structural health monitoring, detect pavements distresses, monitoring the facades of ancient architectural and historical monuments, trilateration networks for accurate Georeferencing of spaces, etc. [7,9,[11][12][13]. Structural deformation monitoring is the primary use of scanners for evaluating an object's state [1].…”
