Study protocol on prevalence of non-exudative macular neovascularisation and its contribution to prediction of exudation in fellow eyes with unilateral exudative AMD (EYE-NEON)

Abstract: Purpose Fellow eyes of patients with unilateral neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) are at risk of developing macular neovascularisation (MNV). These eyes may first develop subclinical non-exudative MNV (neMNV) before they leak to form exudative MNV (eMNV). The EYE NEON study is a 2-year study aimed at estimating the prevalence and incidence of neMNV and evaluating its role as a predictor for conversion to neovascular AMD. Methods EYE NEON … Show more

“…The validity of any of these OCTA biomarkers as precise predictors of exudative activity has not been established yet. Indeed, the EYE-NEON study will assess the incidence and prevalence of NE-MNV, and the usefulness of NE-MNV as a predictor of exudation by analyzing OCTA at 2 years’ follow-up of fellow eyes of unilateral AMD [ 61 ]. Interestingly, Altinisik et al found no significant differences in morphological features, area and activation findings of exudative type 1 MNV in nAMD and pachychoroid neovasculopathy, as well [ 62 ].…”

“…Nonexudative macular neovascularization (neMNV) has only recently been appreciated as an entity and, when present, signifies a high risk of conversion to exudation MNV [ 70 72 ]. As such, recognizing OCT signs that suggest their presence is invaluable for appropriate counselling of patients.…”

“…One ongoing research study (EYE-NEON) is investigating the prevalence and incidence of neMNV and the role of several biomarkers as predictors for conversion to nAMD [ 72 ]. Thickening of the subretinal layers and presence of subretinal hyperreflective material (SHRM) are also early signs that may suggest the development of neovascularization and potential exudation [ 31 , 74 , 75 ].…”
