Study Protocol of CBT-AP Trial: A Randomized Controlled Trial of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Integrated with Activity Pacing for Fatigued Breast Cancer Patients Undergoing Chemotherapy

Abstract: Purpose: This paper reports the methodology for undertaking a randomized controlled trial to assess the combined effect of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and activity pacing on fatigue experienced by breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. Method: Fifty-eight patients experiencing severe fatigue will be randomized to a CBT group or usual care group. The intervention will be given for 6 sessions by a trained oncology nurse. Primary and secondary outcome measures will be assessed at baseline, the six… Show more

“…Strategies focusing on education, improving motivation, 38 pacing to help break activities up, build stamina and promote a balance between rest and activity-as a standalone or supplementary intervention-could be helpful. 39 In contrast, interventions aimed at the cognitive difficulties associated with PH, including rumination, thinking biases and worry, could be a focus when targeting anxiety. Indeed, unlike depression which may be more related to the severity of PH, the link between anxiety and PH may be better explained by factors influencing cognitions, such as coping skills to manage internal and external stressors and support from others.…”

“…The earlier treatment of fatigue during chemotherapy is very important because it may assist women not only by decreasing fatigue during cancer treatment but also for treatment adherence. It provides women with evidence-based strategies during their earlier treatment trajectory that they can continue to use after cancer treatment and into survivorship ( 32 , 33 ). Therefore, it will be a pioneering study that will assess the feasibility and efficacy of CBT-AP among breast cancer patients receiving chemotherapy.…”

“…Studies have emphasized the importance of nonpharmacological pain management techniques such as CBT ( George & Kumar, 2013 ). Furthermore, another piece of evidence also emphasized that since CBT is effective in alleviating pain, depression, and anxiety, and improving quality of life, it should be practiced ( Castro et al, 2012 ; Elyasi et al, 2021 ; Getu et al, 2021 ).…”
