Study on Tooth Profiles of the Harmonic Drive

Abstract: The present paper deals with an analysis of the kinematics and geometry of the tooth engagement of the harmonic drive, and presents a new method for determining tooth profiles of the harmonic drive. First, two assumptions are set up: (1) Though there is relative motion among the respective teeth of the flexspline during flexing, the individual teeth themselves can be considered to be rigid. (2) The pitch between the respective teeth of the flexspline is constant on the neutral line. Experiments confirm the exi… Show more

“…For any value of x k (¼X k ) with respect to the ellipse axes (i.e. xO 1 y axes), the value of Y coordinate, Y ke is calculated using equation (2) and C is calculated using equation (4). Y k , with respect to the central axis (XOY), the parameters used for pitch curve design, is expressed as…”

“…Various attempts are made to improve the performance of the strain wave gearing (SWG) system, commonly known as HD, since its introduction by Musser 1,2 in late 1950s. The synthesis of suitable tooth profiles to work with the conventional ovalshaped cam [3][4][5] is one of them. Consequently, attempts are made to optimize deflections of teeth, rim, bearing, length of the flex spline (FS) cup, etc.…”

“…Dong et al [4] and Chen et al [5] describe the issue study on parameters tooth of the harmonic drive. Kondo et al [6] describe the issue study on profiles tooth of the harmonic drive. The harmonic movement also secures an even distribution of the contact stress on gearing on both sides; this makes it possible to transmit rather high torques (1:50, 1:100 and 1:150).…”

“…Various tooth profiles of the HD have been studied and proposed (Kondo and Takada, 1990; Chen et al , 2014b; Maiti, 2004) under different assumptions. The teeth of FS were assumed to be rigid and the pitch between the teeth of FS was assumed to be constant on the neutral line (Kondo and Takada, 1990).…”
